West Ham United defender Winston Reid has stated that his side need to work hard and dig deeper if they are to buck their recent losing trend.

A 3-0 defeat to Southampton at home on Sunday means that the Hammers have now lost five of their opening six Premier League games this season.

The London side looked devoid of inspiration and once Charlie Austin had opened the scoring for the visitors, there was only ever going to be one winner.

Slaven Bilic will need to go back to the drawing board ahead of next weekend’s Premier League clash with newly promoted Middlesbrough, which the London club will be desperate to win.

Reid played in the defeat to the Saints and admitted that his side need to improve if they are to salvage something from a season that promised os much after an exciting summer.

“When you lose you, you can always do more,” he told the club’s official website.

“We’ve played against good teams so far and we need to work a lot harder to get a bit of luck on our side.

“You could see out there that they worked harder than us and they got a good result.

To get our confidence back, we need to work hard. We need to dig deep and work a lot harder.

“We’re six games in and we’ve only got three points, so we need to dig deeper, produce a better performance and get a win.

“The most important thing for us now is picking up that next three points.”

West Ham’s defence is a worry, with the side letting in 11 goals in their last three Premier League games.
