Chris Sutton has taken West Ham’s 3-0 defeat to Southampton on Saturday as the perfect opportunity to take aim at key playmaker Dimitri Payet.

The pundit has stated that the France international is yet to fire this season and that he expects more from the Marseille attacking midfielder.

“Dimitri Payet looks a shadow of the player from last season,” Sutton told BBC Sport.

“Ok, he scored a free-kick against Accrington, but who are they?

“West Ham’s players don’t even look that bothered. We saw Dimitri Payet’s talent in the European Championships but he hasn’t shown it here.”

A 3-0 defeat to the Saints on Sunday means the London club have now lost five of their first six matches this season and face a tough task to challenge for a place in the top six – which was the side’s aim before the campaign began.

Payet was a devastating attacker for the Hammers last season and found himself nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award due to spectacular individual performances for Slaven Bilic’s men.

West Ham now have a home clash against Premier League new boys Middlesbrough next weekend and will be desperate to record an invaluable three points to lift the collective spirits.
