Pundit Chris Sutton has stated that West Ham United should not have sold James Tomkins over the course of the summer and has questioned goalkeeper Adrian’s place in the starting XI.

The Hammers are up against the wall after a disastrous start to the new season, which has included Europa League elimination and the loss of five of the club’s first six Premier League games.

After a disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Southampton on Sunday, it is expected that Slaven Bilic will make changes to his starting XI for the upcoming clash with Middlesbrough at the London Stadium this weekend.

Tomkins was one of the only major players to leave West Ham over the summer, with the Hammers youth team graduate joining London rivals Crystal Palace for a £10 million fee.

Adrian has also not covered himself in glory this season to date and as such Sutton has questioned some of Bilic’s decisions both on and off the pitch.

“I have a couple of reservations over Adrian in the West Ham goal,” he told BBC Sport.

I’d have gone for Darren Randolph personally.

“Also the chopping and changing in defence hasn’t helped them. I was surprised they let James Tomkins leave for Crystal Palace.

“Last season he was one of the key defenders for West Ham. Why sell him?”
