West Ham United have had a £31 million offer for French forward Alexandre Lacazette rejected, according to The Sun, with the Hammers set to turn to Liverpool’s Christian Benteke as an alternative.

The Hammers are in the market for a high-profile new number nine to lead the club’s transition to their new Olympic Stadium home.

A host of distinguished strikers have been touted as potential options, with Lacazette’s name mentioned regularly as a target for the London club.

The latest report suggests that West Ham were willing to break their club record transfer fee to land the hotshot forward, who continues to hit the back of the net with regularity in Ligue 1.

With Lyon desperate to hold onto their attacking talisman, Slaven Bilic’s side may well have to look closer to home for an alternative.

The report suggests that the Hammers will now bid for Benteke, who has not set the world alight since moving to Anfield from Aston Villa.
