Andy Carroll has spoken of his delight at returning to the West Ham first team.

Speaking after the Capital One defeat to Leicester City, the striker told the London Evening Standard how he rates the team’s current start to the season:

“We’re a great team at the minute and the lads are playing well,

“They’ve got some great results apart from last night and as an attacking force they’ve been fantastic. It’s good to be part of it. I’ve been looking forward since the start of the season to be back and now I am. That’s what I’ve wanted and what I’ve worked hard for.”

If Carroll can stay fit for the foreseeable future, he will give Slaven Bilic a bit of a selection headache in the striking department. Nikica Jelavic came on late in the second half against Manchester City but he will be competing with Carroll for a first team opportunity.

Although the striker crisis was the talk of the summer, Diafra Sakho has performed superbly for the Hammers so far. His tally of two in the Premier League is solid but it has been his fantastic work rate that has impressed fans since the start of the season.

The Senegalese forward dropped back into a deeper position in the second half against Manchester City and has shown the committed side to his game that has made him such a popular figure with the fans.

It’s clearly good news that Carroll is back and raring to go, but competition for places this year is probably the toughest it has been for a very long time. Let’s hope it brings the best out of them.
