How close is our squad to being complete?

|

With a little over a month to go until the Hammers kick off their Premier League campaign against Aston Villa, with the transfer window in full swing, just what does Sam Allardyce need to do to make the Irons competitive?

The fastest growing Hammers website is now on Facebook, click the link to be entered into our up and coming competitions http://www.facebook.com/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

I don’t think the squad is too far away personally, in fact I think we are just 5 players away from being able to compete, and the news of Maiga jetting in for his medical ahead of a proposed move to the Hammers that helps the cause indeed. Defence and up front is my main concern, upfront minus Carlton Cole the frontline looks fragile in terms of experience in the Premier League, so providing the Mali born international completes his move I think one other striker with experience in the English top flight is required to aid Cole and co upfront. With rumours circulating with a move for Jamie Mackie and Andy Carroll it appears Allardyce also agrees with my logic.

So attacking wise if we can complete deals for two strikers it would mean we could push Vaz Te out wide to the wing, and if the Hammers could secure a move for another winger the attacking side of the team looks strong. With links with Matthew Etherington, a move could see the former Hammer complete the attacking jigsaw.

In midfield, the team looks strong with Jack Collison, Mohamed Diame, Kevin Nolan, Mark Noble and Gary O’Neil all competing for the central midfield berth the centre of the park looks good. The up and coming Ravel Morrison means the future of the midfield looks bright, and could be a ready made replacement for the ageing Kevin Nolan.

My main concern is at the back, where just James Tomkins and Winston Reid are competing to play at the heart of defence, for me this is a real worry, the young pair could do with an experienced head next to them

to help grow in experience. Tomkins is ready for the Premier League for me and his call up to the GB Olympic team show just how far the Basildon born defender has come. It is important that Allardyce brings in a defender with experience in the Premier League and links with Sebastian Bassong and Curtis Davies is reassuring as competition for places is vital.

Meanwhile at right back the Irons appear short in quality, and with Southampton set to beat us to the signing of Nathaniel Clyne the Hammers must secure a move for a right back, as Guy Demel and Joey O’Brien don’t fill me with confidence as we embark on the Premier League.

So I think with the current squad I think we could compete in the league but with 5 new signings in key areas, the East end club could surprise a few teams and have a strong season.

Come on you Irons!
