West Ham must reignite their reported interest in Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater as he would be the perfect final addition to their squad ahead of the new season.

The Hammers were previously reported by the Telegraph in May as being willing to spend £30million on signing the 28-year-old central midfielder.

Since then known Hammers insider ExWHUemployee shared in his column for the West Ham Way that the Hammers had spoken to the Blues about possibly taking a midfielder on loan this summer.

According to ExWHUemployee the Hammers were considering a move for one of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley, or Danny Drinkwater with the club hoping to take one of those names on loan with a view to permanently sign them further down the road.

After witnessing several new recruits arrive at the London Stadium this summer, such as Jack Wilshere and Felipe Anderson, it’s clear Manuel Pellegrini side could still benefit from a top-quality defensive midfielder being recruited.

A midfield general who is able to dominate the battle for the ball in the centre of the pitch is the final puzzle piece needed to complete Pellegrini’s jigsaw for the perfect squad ahead of the new season.

This need for a strong tackling defensive-minded midfielder must lead the Hammers to reignite their reported pursuit of Drinkwater as he is the ideal option for them to snap up.

The 28-year-old, who can feature as a central or defensive midfielder, managed only 12 league appearances last season for the Blues and it’s likely he struggle to feature again for them.

Drinkwater will struggle due to having to impress a new manager at Stamford Bridge as Maurizio Sarri has succeeded Antonio Conte as manager, as reported by the BBC, and will no doubt want to bring in players familiar to him.

After barely getting to kick a ball last season the 28-year-old, who aside from being an excellent tackler of the ball is also a sublime passer, is probably chomping at the bit to remind the Premier League of his talents.

Drinkwater previously impressed for Leicester City as he helped them surprisingly lift the league title in 2016, so knows all about what it is needed to succeeded in England’s top-flight.

This all means that the Hammers should reignite their interest in Drinkwater as he would be the final puzzle piece that the club need to acquire this summer in order to ensure they have successful campaign next season.
