West Ham boss David Moyes was determined to bolster his midfield options in the January transfer window but failed in a number of moves, before landing Joao Mario on-loan from Inter Milan.

The Hammers were chasing a number of reported targets, including Anderlecht’s 22-year-old Belgian international Leander Dendoncker.

However, a move for the young starlet came too late in the window to be concluded, although Dendoncker has stated a transfer bringing him to East London would be the ‘logical’ next step in his career.

Speaking to Belgian outlet Het Laatste NieuwsDendoncker said:

“If deals still have to be arranged in the evening on January 31, there is little chance that there will be a breakthrough. West Ham seemed to me, however, a nice club to take the next step in my career.”

Whether West Ham reignite their interest this summer remains to be seen, though his value could rise significantly if he performs well at the World Cup.
