West Ham are seemingly on the verge of a major piece of transfer news, with it being reported that a deal is close for one midfield target.

The Daily Express claims the Hammers are edging towards a £12m deal to sign Jonjo Shelvey from fellow Premier League strugglers Newcastle United, though a deal is on hold until the Magpies sign a replacement.

Shelvey has been in-and-out of the Newcastle side this season, though will be cup tied in the FA Cup if he does seek a transfer, and the 25-year-old is chasing more regular first-team action in an attempt to push himself back into the England fold.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez is seeing his January activity limited by ongoing takeover talk and a sale of Shelvey, who can be seen as expendable, would raise significant funds to help the Spaniard in his quest to improve the side and retain their Premier League status.

Shelvey is on an £80k-a-week contract in the North East but West Ham are happy to spend to improve their side, after what has been a difficult period following their move to the London Stadium.
