Newcastle United are interested in signing former striker and West Ham hitman Andy Carroll, reports The Mirror.

Carroll, who began his career with the Magpies, has been heavily rumoured to be on his way out of the London Stadium this summer after the Hammers secured the signing of  former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez, and it is understood his former employers are keen on bringing him back to St James’ Park.

The 28-year-old striker, who graduated through the club’s academy on Tyneside, spent 4-and-a-half years in the first team, scoring 33 times in just over 90 appearances before his £35 million to Liverpool in early 2011.

Having struggled at Anfield however, Carroll joined West Ham 18 months later for a then club record fee of £15 million, and while he has been an effective forward at times for the Hammers, the Englishman has struggled with injury and form, and hence could be set to leave the East London club after five seasons.

Newcastle have already added Stoke City forward Joselu this summer, but Rafael Benitez remains keen to continue to bolster his attacking options.
