West Ham United defender Winston Reid had his safety endangered and was clearly hurt by Sergio Aguero in a recent Premier League game – which led to the Argentine’s three-match ban.

The Manchester City attacker clashed with the New Zealander in his side’s 3-1 win over the Hammers at the Etihad Stadium last month.

Aguero was punished retrospectively after the incident and given a three-match ban from domestic duties.

City appealed the decision and hoped that their talismanic striker could play against Manchester United last weekend, but the South American was forced to sit out the 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

The FA have revealed that all three of the officials examining the appeals process were in agreement that Reid could have been seriously hurt in the altercation and this led to Aguero’s ban being upheld.

“All three commission members felt that in their opinion, having been knocked off balance by Winston Reid, Mr Aguero had thrown out his left arm in an aggressive manner that was excessive in force and brutal, which clearly endangered the safety of Mr Reid,” The Express quote the statement as saying.

“Indeed, even though the point of Mr Aguero’s elbow did not connect with Mr Reid, his flailing forearm did and this contact between forearm and throat/neck clearly hurt Mr Reid.

“The commission members noted the clenched fist of Mr Aguero as he threw his left elbow towards Mr Reid, the upward angle of the movement and the force of the movement.”

Aguero scored a hat-trick against Borussia Monchengladbach in the Champions League last night but will miss City’s next two Premier League games.
