West Ham United chairman David Gold has backed Andy Carroll to win a spot in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2016 following an injury to Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck.

The former Manchester United forward picked up a knock in his side’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Sunday and as such is now a doubt for the international tournament in France this summer.

Competition for places in the Three Lions squad are hotly contested, especially in attack, but Carroll is thought to be in consideration for inclusion.

The 27-year-old has put his injury concerns behind him and is in good form at the Boleyn Ground, with the powerhouse forward showing his capabilities with a hat-trick against Arsenal recently.

Gold has stated that Carroll should get the call to replace Welbeck and that he would be an asset to Hodgson this summer.

“They don’t have an Andy Carroll in the squad. They don’t have an alternative,” The Mirror quote the Hammers chief as saying.

“The centre-forwards they’ve got are all very similar — all good players, don’t misunderstand me, but if suddenly you think, ‘Do you know, I’m a manager, this isn’t going right, I’d like to change this. I’d like to change tactics because maybe we need an aerial threat.’

“Who do you bring on? Another guy 5ft 2ins? I don’t think so.”

Harry Kane, Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy will all be in consideration to start for England this summer.
