Former West Ham United striker Dean Ashton has stated that he feels Andy Carroll did not impress enough against Manchester United in midweek to earn a spot in England’s Euro 2016 squad.

The attacking berths in Roy Hodgson’s squad have been blown open following a serious injury to Danny Welbeck, with a resurgent Carroll in the running for selection.

The former Newcastle United striker has overcome his injury concerns and has come into a bit of form for Slaven Bilic’s men of late, scoring a memorable hat-trick against Arsenal last month.

Carroll is up against the likes of Jermain Defoe, Theo Walcott and others to win the additional striking spot in the England contingent, but Ashton feels that the centre forward’s display against United did not help his case.

“With Danny Welbeck’s injury I am sure he’ll be looking at who else could step in,” Ashton told talkSPORT.

“I neither think Rashford or Carroll had a particularly fantastic game. When Andy went through you just thought ‘go on, stick it away’ but he didn’t quite take it as well as he should have done.

“But I didn’t think either striker shone for Roy.”

England are looking to play an expansive brand of football in France but Carroll has been touted in many corners as a potentially effective Plan B should things not be working out for the Three Lions.
