West Ham United are one of a host of English clubs interested in bringing Thomas Vermaelen back to the Premier League, according to Fichajes.

The former Arsenal captain has had a torrid time with injuries since swapping the Emirates Stadium for Camp Nou, with the Belgian sitting out the entire first campaign as a Blaugrana player.

Although Vermaelen has been given chances to play on occasion this term, the veteran finds himself behind Javier Mascherano and Gerard Pique in the European champions’ preferences to start.

Given that he has only played intermittently of late, the Spanish press are touting a move back to England in the summer, with West Ham one of those keenest on his signature.

If fully fit and able to play weekly, Vermaelen could well be an exciting option to bolster Slaven Bilic’s rearguard, but his signing would be something of a risk given the defender’s recent injury track record.
