West Ham have reportedly started negotiations with Italian side Torino over a summer move for centre-half Nikola Maksimovic, Gianluca Di Marzio claims.

The 24-year-old Serbian defender has grown in stature over recent years with the Serie A club and continues to impress for an over-achieving side.

Maksimovic has been compared in some quarters to compatriot Nemanja Vidic, while Napoli are believed to be real suitors of the former Red Star Belgrade enforcer.

The report claims that West Ham are ready to offer the gifted centre-half a four-year contract to join the Hammers but need to agree a fee with Torino, who rate their defender highly.

Manchester United and City have both been mentioned as possible destinations for the Eastern European in the past.

Slaven Bilic’s men will look to bolster their defence this summer, but have competent options at centre-half currently in Angelo Ogbonna, Winston Reid and James Tomkins.
