Oi Hammers, can we just calm down for a second!?

Andy Carroll Newcastle United Sam AllardyceThere seems to be some mad hysteria about the lack of deadline day signings, especially the prime target of a striker. Some West Ham Twitter accounts seemed so desperate to break some good news that they’ve attempted to create a backlash.

Some are stirring up fans to tweet their disgust to David Gold, declaring the majority of fans are “unhappy Hammers”.

I appreciate we more or less need a striker but Andy Carroll is back now and any striker that would have been brought in would have been told they were always going to be second best behind big Andy. Therefore that would halt any deal which would pull in big players like Demba Ba, as many fans hoped on deadline day.

As mentioned above, the man who the team is more or less built around is due back from injury very soon. Ideally Modibo Maiga would have contributed 1 or 2 goals but he obviously isn’t of the quality we need and he is certainly more effective off the bench. Ricardo Vaz Te didn’t get the move he wanted either and if he can rebuild the burnt bridges, maybe he could be given the chance up top that he claims he wants. It could be the making of the man.

Most fans are worried about Andy getting injured again and what will happen then. We can’t worry about “ifs” and “buts” all season. We have to hope that he doesn’t get injured, simple as that.

Carlton Cole is supposedly on his way back to West Ham who should never have left it seems. He suits our style of play and is comfortably not good enough for a starting place but can certainly cause problems off the bench. If that deal does get sorted then at least we have 3 strikers to cover just 1 position until January where perhaps the Chairmen will re-evaluate the position again.

We’ve predominantly used 1 striker so far this season, and okay we’ve had a relatively kind start in terms of fixtures, but we have picked up 4 points and sit comfortably in mid-table. We beat Cardiff City who had 7 designated forwards in their squad to choose from for that fixture (inc. 2 ex-Hammers in Bellamy and Maynard).

I just feel we are far from a panic stations situation. Let’s not make a big deal out of nothing and enjoy having nothing to moan about instead of creating things to excuse a poor season.

    Hear, hear.

Finally some sense. Yes Maiga has had a bad start to the season but we have a international standard striker, and, providing Carlton returns, someone who loves the club and most importantly the fans and will, I’m sure, be hungry to prove himself after being rejected by us at the start of the summer. Also, lets not forget that Maiga scored that cracker against So’ton last year after coming on. Maybe the next match will be the kickstart we need to scoring again.

    • JMan43 says:

Think you need to stop what you’re sniffing this is the most monumental cock up going. How can you exit a transfer window without one recognised goalscorer and say it was a solid window. Not to have a goalscoring striker in the team at all is a debacle.

  • Storm Sherrington says:

I would not be so sure about CC. Aprently he was offered a contract but his adviser thought he could get better so he rejected it. I dont think the board would be too pleased to go back on that…. I hope im wrong.

  • englandsnumber6 says:

give Cole an incentive of 30k a goal see what the donkey can do with that carrot dangled in front of him

  • Ashie says:

It’s OK saying we cannot worry about ‘Ifs and Buts’, but surely there is an argument for planning for eventualities, especially when in the case of Andy Carroll it’s 99% certain he will get at least one bad injury before January, just by the nature of his play. A serious injury and we are well and truly up the swanee. Carlton should have been given a contract before we had to beg him back. Not to mention that if we all knew how Sam was going to play so why keep Maiga, he’s proved he is NOT a lone striker! You either have adequate cover or a plan B. Sam does not have either!

  • Dave Lea says:

All this hysteria has come off the back of a poor display against Stoke, and suddenly grown men are wetting their knickers because we havent signed anyone on the last day and we’re gonna get relegated. Its pathetic and I’m embarressed for some of these mugs.

To have a dig at the owners and manager, that have saved our club from posibble extiction but definately many years in the wilderness of the lower leagues, is an absolute disgrace. These same fans that moan about FFP and how it affects us conveniently forget hat we have 1 large payment left to Sheff United and £100m debt, thats why the likes of Cardiff/soton/norwich have outspent us. Yet our owners have still invested over £20m even with all of these issues in the background. Sack the board and get another bunch of clueless bankers from a scandinavian country in to run the club I say! Or maybe we can get Brown back, he was a great chairman???

As for Carlton, Id happily have him back as back up. He may or may not be a better player than Maiga, but he is certainly better suited to the role he will have to play if Big Andy is injured.

    • JMan43 says:

All great but where are our goals coming from? We have no goalscoring steriker at the club and CC is hardly going to make up for that.

  • grayster says:

Dear oh dear. The season ended so well. Carlton contract not renewed (sorry but he never made the grade in the premiership and nor does he work BFS-style). We bought the big Geordie and Sam talked of the extra striker. It was clear last season that Vaz Te wasn’t up to it (on the wing or down the middle) in the premiership. I had hoped Maiga would see more action but didn’t. Had a good pre-season but, let’s be clear, doesn’t appear up to one peg at the top job that Sam insists on (nor is Carlton). Our first 3 games have shown we do need to worry. Without Carroll, we may have a problem. Those who think we won’t or think Cole should have been kept must only be aiming for survival this season; I was hoping for top half again. I can’t fathom why we haven’t solved the most glaring issue we have had season after season. Sorry for the cliche, but we really don’t have a decent plan B (again). However, Carlton is a better plan than no plan.

    • JMan43 says:

Completely agree Grayster and the debacle is they have had plenty of time to resolve this and did nothing!!!

  • notanyoldiron says:

    Toby
I sympathise with you because you are trying to be positive and putting on a brave face. But the FACTS are that in the last 2 games we haven’t had a shot ON TARGET! And against Stoke we had 45% possession! AT HOME v Stoke of all teams. Totally unacceptable. These are alarming facts Toby, not opinion or conjecture. We failed to take heed in the window and now we are in a bad place. Let’s hope King Carroll stays fit. Because if he doesn’t it could be a drop for us.

    • Toby Fry says:

Firstly, Stoke aren’t THAT Stoke anymore. Hughes is not Pulis, a complete change in style of play. I appreciate that we haven’t found the target anywhere near enough but you can learn from things like that. Especially when the main player of the team is back. Plus even if we did find ourselves in a tough position (which I doubt we will. There are worse) we have another transfer window before it’s too late.

      • JMan43 says:

We didn’t have one shot on goal let alone find the target, doesn’t that worry you at all? We were at home!!!

      • notanyoldiron says:

Sorry Toby, Stoke WERE that Stoke. And they were poor. We were clueless. No shots on target against 2 teams who wont be top 7 or 8. That’s not a one off bad day! That’s 2 off bad days out of 3! Worrying

  • Steve says:

It’s not ‘mad hysteria’ it’s genuine concern about where goals are coming from. It’s very easy for you to say “Andy Carroll is back now” or “due back from injury very soon” (which is it, by the way?) but he ISN’T back yet is he? And without him we’ve looked impotent in front of goal. Cole won’t be back at West Ham so we have a choice of Maiga up front or… err… Maiga. (I don’t see Allardyce as the forgiving sort so Vaz Te won’t get a look in). Maiga just isn’t good enough, whatever Fat Sam would have us believe. Personally over the course of the season I think we’ll get enough games and goals out of Carroll to see us ok (and to be honest the rest of the team all seem to raise their game when he’s playing too) but anyone who thinks our squad is capable of more than finishing 10th – 14th is fooling themselves. Just because people don’t see the world through Claret & Blue tinted glasses doesn’t make them guilty of mad hysteria, just realism.

  • ironwatch says:

u can mask it up how ever u like mate but why sign Downing if u needed a striker more then a winger 6 mil on a player we did not need
This is the worst window we ever had look at it
we sign a left back that cannot get into the team
we did not need a keeper
A/C was here anyway on top the squid is full of championship players
    Nolan over the hill
    Nobel useless s/hit

  • Chris says:

Maybe the fans want to see something more ambitious than 1 up front. Have you thought of that? And as AC seems to be as injury prone as Kieron Dyer and Magia isn’t good enough to play in the premiership then where’s the goals gonna come from? Every player we’ve been linked with except Ba (which was never going to happen) has been an absolute joke, sub standard players to fill a squad position. On Saturday Gold released a tweet saying we need more in attack. Are you seriously trying to tell me it took that pathetic excuse for a performance against Stoke to understand that, because if that’s the level of knowledge the board has got then we’ve got real problems and we’re always going to have them while we play this boring,un-entertaining, un-inspiring 1 up front and bas e a squad around a player who is gong to be unfit for at least 50% of the campaign.

  • sibbo says:

I said at the start of the season we will struggle with sam in charge he signs players that are past it or injury prone players,he doesn’t no how to play 2 strikers and his tactics are mind boggling at times,if carrol gets injured again I can see us having another Kieran dyer on the books.

    • Jonny ninja says:

All you do is moan about allardyce, getting a bit boring! Fans like you will moan whatever so knock yourself out pal!

  • Heedsy says:

You guys are living in a dream. Senior management have screwed up. They have had months to sell and buy players and have achieved nothing. Even you lot know there are holes in the squad and yet nothing has been done. Downing? Do me a favour. The David’s did the same at Birmingham. Appearing to bid for players to keep the fans happy only to fail. Sound familiar. They need to be told its unacceptable and BFS needs to loose a few of his mates (Nolan) if we are to move forward. How about a boycot of the home game after next.

    • Irons fan says:

We’ve got the best squad we’ve had for years

    • Graham Lang says:

I still doubt the motives and commitment of the 3 stooges. Are they trying to make West Ham be like man u without spending their money, selling OUR Football ground and renting an athletic track, to line their pockets, they after all are businessmen first. They say they are West ham fans, just because they lived in the area. David Beckham lived in the area and has never been connected to West Ham, it’s not about locality. I am of the old school that would like to see, a strong long term manager, a strong long term team built up from the academy and lastly but most importantly stay at Upton Park.

    • Big ern says:

Heedsy, u r a tool, this the best squad we’ve had in years. It takes time to rebuild and we’re in a much stronger position than we were 2/3 years ago!! I’m sick of so called fans like u who expect so much so soon. We’ve broken our transfer record twice in as many years and your knocking the owners!! Actually we’ve smashed our record..!! Get with the programme support the team or do one u mug.

  • Jason says:

What a bunch of twats all you haters are! If we smashed Stoke 3-0 not one of you would of been piping up saying we need this we need that. At the end of the day we have a transfer budget which we used a large chunk on securing Andy Carroll who in my eyes was one of the best in the league towards the end of last season maybe not for the goals he scored but for the ones he created, and he puts teams to the knife every game. Once he is fit we will be scoring goals. You can see o but if he gets injured we need back up but so does every team can say that look at united without rvp or rooney, spurs last year without bale, sunderland without fletcher, newcastle without ben arfa, you can never have adequate cover for your best player, that is the reason they are your best player. Now get over it and get behind your team a strong season ahead with plenty more to come, be happy we are in the bpl could of been alot worse!

    • Johnsey says:

Yeah but we DIDN’T smash Stoke 3-0 did we.

Instead we served up the most inept performance in a long long time, the reason for that is pretty clear. We don’t have anyone who looks like scoring and guess what? We still don’t.
So when Andy Carrol creates all these chances you speak of …………Who’s gonna take them?

      • Irons fan says:

Same team that still hasn’t conceded a goal in open play

        • the swindon hammer says:

true but anyone with eyes can see that we deont have enough goals in the team sam says we are playing 4 3 3 with Jarvis and downing alongside maiga well tell me which one of them is going to get enough goals? ok we have ac to come back and if he stays fit will get 13 or 14 but who else will chip in Nolan 7 or 8 jc 5 or 6 but that’s your lot when we desperately needed a goal scorer sam went out and bought downing simply not good enough allardyce

      • notanyoldiron says:

Well said Johnsey. We dont hate West Ham Jason. We care enough to get on here and express our concerns. Ang give praise when it’s due.

    • Big ern says:

      Here here well said mate!

  • Fan for 40 years says:

That’s me done with my beloved club. Too many disappointments over too long a period for me. To re-sign Carlton Cole seems beyond rational sense to me. Always thought he was utter shite, still do. We are the only club that would make such a backward step. I’m not paying good money to see that useless twat lose us another 10-20 points in a season. Spitting feathers at the moment.

  • Jason says:

Johnno, yeah we didnt smash stoke 3-0, and yeah we did have the worst game for a long long time but these things happen to a mid table team! That is all we are at the moment and we are a work in progress! After we beat Southampton with a Carroll double you will all pipe down. Carlton Cole is not shite, he is a decent player, tries his heart out and makes for a good cheap back up. Big Sam will bring us onwards and upwards.

  • djd678 says:

Same old same old I see, we had a relatively succesfull return to the prem and now everyone thinks we have a top 6 finish on the way, one loss and it’s all doo and gloom. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you want week in week out wins and a souless team to support, Chelsea are just over the city. Look at where we were two years ago and look where we are now! I know it’s not everyones cup of tea but West Ham are making progress. We’ve seen what happens if you rush thing under the biscuit idiots, let’s have more than 2 or 3 years at the top and push on from there. Sky Sports Generastion Football Fans, you make me laugh

    • grayster says:

We just needed to sign another striker (as all the management has said). For some reason, they ballsed it up and we are now could be exposed at the front. Wanting a decent squad that can build on last season’s success is hardly “sky sports generation”. It’s common sense.

Btw – having expectations to put in a decent performance against Stoke at home is hardly Champions League Chelsea expectations. It’s losing games like that that may really matter in May.

    • Johnsey says:

      You cheeky fu**er,
      “Sky Sports Generation Fans”?
My first game was in 1967, then between Aug 16th 1977 (Norwich) and the end of the 1992 season I never missed a game HOME or AWAY, including the nightmare journey to Tblisi (I’m not counting Luton away)
Before you make sweeping generalisations about real supporters who happen not to agree with you, you might consider the fact that some of us have seen a whole lot more than you pal.

  • realist says:

Its not only not getting another striker or looking useless in attack or Sams tactics being sussed out 18 months ago or Nolan never starting on the bench or us fans paying so much money to watch our hammers. Its the injuries we have already and the fact Carroll ain’t been available a whole season his entire career. Eggs one basket. Thank god for Reid, Collins and Jussi. Worried.

  • JMan43 says:

I will also get behind the team but the club’s mgt team need to held to account for exposing us to a very tough season. They knew what had to be done, they knew we needed goals and we have done nothing. Not good enough and saving the club two years ago only goes so far.
