Are James Tomkins’ Days Numbered At West Ham?

|

James TomkinsAfter James Collins’ tremendous defensive performance against Liverpool and Winston Reid stealing many of the headlines in what has been an outstanding season for the newly appointed New Zealand captain, the attention turns to West Ham’s number 5, James Tomkins, and what the future holds for him.

Are you on Facebook? Excellent, so are we http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

Agaisnt Liverpool, I personally thought the Englishman showed the composure and ability that saw him play week in week out last season. A fantastic goal line clearance denied a certain goal from Steven Gerrard and several challenges helped West Ham gain the point at Anfield which saw us edge ever closer to certain Premier League safety.

I think it would be silly for us to let James Tomkins leave come summer, no club can go the whole season using only 2 centre backs, and Tomkins is very good back up, if he cannot reclaim his place from the “Ginger Pele”. The rock of the defence from last season is still only 24 years old, with room to grow and potential still to be fulfilled. Ginge isn’t getting any younger so rotation between the two could work well in West Ham’s favour.

It all depends on whether he is willing to play a smaller part at the club, if not then the player himself may want to move on, but I personally hope not. I’d like to think Tomkins will stay with us and play when he is called upon, if he continues to perform like against Liverpool and like last season, he could well get back into the side on a full time basis. Spence, Tomka, Reid and O’Brien could well be a successful and young defence.

Forever West Ham is now on Google+, so be sure to find us on there by quite simply (and rather unsurprisingly) searching ‘Forever West Ham’

need to keep him prefer him to ginge

  • Algy says:

Take 8 million for him, he never looks composed when we play the ball across the back, which results in making a poor pass to a team mate or giving it away.

  • Tony says:

Keep him, hes young probably on minimal wages for a PL player a good back up

  • Bozzy In Exeter says:

Had his day, sell him. Ginge is a much better player alongside Reid.

  • Tom says:

Good last year, looks out of his depth in the prem, as he did before we were relegated. But would rather see him stay as backup than let him leave on the cheap.

  • Tony says:

To be fair hes alrite as a back up and if he goes whats our other options for a cb? Ging has been solid ( minus hes few bad mistakes ) but overal a key player, if neecastle want him still and are prepared to pay a good fee then why not but just be prepared that we might end up worse off for a back up, ideally we need the main focus on our attcking options i think defence and midfield are pretty solid

  • Hugh Bevan says:

Should have started from the start. Collins has lost us 3 games because of silly errors and is not consistent enough. Tomkins was top class last year but not been given a run of games this season. We should keep him, class player.

  • Rob says:

He should be kept for squad rotation. Get rid of him and we only have 2 recognised CB’s.

  • Alan says:

Everyone seems to be getting carried away after Collins puts in one very good performance. He’s cost us a lot of points this season, and will do it again no doubt. Give JT a run in the side and keep Collins as back up.

  • The Cat says:

I think it’s easy to see why Reid and Collins are the number one pairing this season and it’s well deserved. As for Tomkins, this should be seen as a bump in the road and an experience to be learnt from. Its far too early to be talking about Tomkins being moved on as at 24 he’s still young with tremendous potential but his pride will have been dented by not being first choice this season, so my money’s on him to have a better pre-season this time round and kick on.

    Keep!

  • levs says:

I can see him growing in to a class act. Keep him for sure. He has got claret and Blue blood.

  • paul says:

I think you have forgotten all his mistakes. He has been woefully inadequate in the premier league and shone only when we played in the championship

  • Alex Mcleish says:

championship player if he wants to stay as back up untill we get some one better thats up to him looks like a little boy in an adult world.

  • Andy says:

Paul/Alex are you serious!!!! He’s young and has to learn and remember ginges cock ups!!!! And Reids. Get a life and actually look at what dribble your writing. Neither of you have a Scooby !! Coyfi !!!

  • John Pritchard says:

I can’t believe the negative comments on here – Tomkins is going to grow into a fine player and it would be a major mistake to let him go – he and Reid were superb last year and I think you’ll struggle to find mistakes this year _ in any case all players make mistakes and Ginge , who has also been great this year, has cost us 2 games with appalling lapses on back passes – along with Reid we are blessed with 3 excellent centre backs. Tomkins didn’t seem to recover from losing pre-season due to his Olympic inactivity and by that time Reidy and Ginge were up and running – let’s just hope Sam doesn’t try playing him in midfield again, that definitely doesn’t work

    • Douglas says:

@ John Pritchard: Bang on, clearly his is going to be top draw one day. Nice to see someone looking beyond the end of their nose for once.

  • Stew says:

Are you an idiot? Collins hasn’t got many years ahead of him and Tonka said he wants a new contract for the Olympic stadium, he aint going anywhere. Do your research!
