West Ham Flirting With Financial Ruin With This Deal

|

Andy CarrollAfter Andy Carroll came back from injury with a goal for West Ham against Swansea City, David Sullivan revealed that there is a deal in place for Andy Carroll to join West Ham should the player want to, now I ask the question is this right for West Ham?

Forever West Ham is now on Google+, so be sure to find us on there by quite simply (and rather unsurprisingly) searching ‘Forever West Ham’

With West Ham’s financial predicament and a rumoured deal worth around the £17 million mark and wages in excess of £80,000 a week, would this make financial sense to sign Carroll or is this once again financial suicide?

Personally I like Carroll and think he does offer a lot to West Ham, he gives us a big threat up front and is a real handful for defenders. However for a striker with such a high transfer figure and wage he simply doesn’t score enough goals for me to think this would be a worth while deal especially at the rumoured figures. I take into consideration that Carroll has come in and has been hounded with injury and not had a consistent run in the side and also it does take time to adapt to a new team but Carroll has never really been prolific in terms of goal scoring.

I think there are a number of deals out there that are more financially viable for West Ham. If you take Adam Le Fondre who has been red hot this season and only cost Reading a rumoured £350,000. Michu only cost Swansea £2 million and he shows you don’t have to spend over the odds for players who can have an impact, which West Ham have a habit of doing. Matt Jarvis for example is a good player but is he really worth the amount we spent on him? I personally don’t think so.

Every fan wants their club to sign the best and biggest players going and I’m no different. I want West Ham to have all the best players gracing the claret and blue shirt, but at what cost? I certainly don’t want to be in the same position before Gold and Sullivan took over the club, and I most certainly don’t want to be the next Portsmouth. West Ham need to get the finances in check before we go throwing that kind of money about on one player and with all due respect to Carroll I would want more for my money than what Carroll offers.

West Ham signed Carroll on loan for the season costing around £2 million plus his £80,000 wage. It’s great that we can attract players such as Carroll but I don’t think he is worth more than that. I know some fans will totally disagree with me and that is fine, but let’s not ruin the hard work Gold, Sullivan and Brady have done in sorting our finances, by throwing money around that we don’t have on a player that is massively over priced. Carroll is not going to be the player to push us back towards European football and therefore I do not feel that he will bring a sufficient return compared to his expenditure.

So the answer to the question is I feel that if this move goes ahead we are committing financial suicide, there are plenty of top players we can attract at a fraction of the price we would pay for Carroll.

Let’s be smart and spend within our means. I am not being a pessimistic fan I just want what’s best for our club and that’s not to throw money around on players that aren’t worth it again! If we are all honest when Liverpool signed Carroll for £35 million from Newcastle we all thought he wasn’t worth it, I know I did.

I really do not understand anybodys problem with the financials of our club. Gold and Sullivan are worth billions, love West Ham and have an excellent marketing team that mentions our debt constantly.
It’s all a smokescreen, to ensure we don’t overpay ala city and chelski. Sam will be manager and if he wants Andy will get him for the cheapest price Liverpool will accept.

this should help the argument. some stats with and with andy this season.

games where andy hasn’t started – 14. points – 13. average of 0.92 points a game. using that average over 25 games so far played would have us on 23 points (17th). or over 38 games – 35 points (18th and relegated on last seasons league table)

With Andy – started 11 games – points – 17. average of 1.54 points a game. that over 25 games would be 39 points (7th). 38 games would be 59 points (7th place finish)

i know its not an exact science as there have been a few harder games played with out andy however he did get a draw away to man city so maybe with him in the team we would have got more from united, liverpool etc. as its now about £1m a place (or more im not sure) that would be £11m more in prize money. almost pays for itself!!

Big ,strong ,bags of potentential , bloody handful to defend against, only going to get better and if we can nuture the confidence and belief that was knocked out of him by Brendan Rogers and instill some loyalty he will be a legend for years to come .

we seem to have a common trend that we are a one man band and Carroll be that player? which is strange because, before Carroll got injured there were large number of West Ham fans constantly slating Carroll cos “he couldnt hit a barn door” but now he has came back and scored the mood has changed once again which i find strange. on the Cole Carroll view if Carroll is far better the Cole how it that they are on the same goals as each other?

    this season

Cole 22 games 2 goals 1 assist and 32 shots
Carroll 14 games 2 goals 0 assists and 31 shots

Shows Carroll has set up loads of goals for us

Well you are entitled to your own opinion but your own numbers tell a different story especially when you put them into perspective. AC (who actually started in only 10 games) played 8 less games then CC with the same amount of goals and virtually the same amount of shots as CC. We are talking about a half fit Carroll who played very few games in the past season and a half and has been plagued by injury since he came here. Basically weve had AC between 50% and 80% fitness at best and with no actual match practice who came late in the transfer window and didnt even do summer training with his new squad (which would have helped him adapt easier). And yet you put a “=” between the two. Odd…

I personally think £15-17 million for Carroll is a little bit too much. He is a player with a great deal of potential and he has performed well for us when he has been fit. I have no problem with his lack of goals he isnt a goalscorer, He will create chances for those around him, He doesnt have a natural goalscorer playing off him to finish these chances on a regular basis so i dont think he gets the credit he deserves. I saw a stat the other day that Mark Noble has created more chances then anybody else in the Premier League without claiming an assist. We have Jarvis and J.Cole who are creative players aswell. The problem is BFS plays one up top and no poacher to reap the rewards from this chances we create. If he was to change the system to someone playing off Carroll, A pacy goal poacher would complement him perfectly. Anyway getting back to the original point about weather it would be a good deal, I think is abit of an expensive deal for a player who we would be playing in a system that wouldn’t get the best out of him. Change to 4-4-2 and i think he would be a great signing

I personally think that 17mill is a bit Wide of the mark, if we decide to sign AC then it would be for a lot less! And for a lot less wages too! The most important thing to remember is that whatever shite is banded about West Ham have first option to buy AC! His continued injury problems can only strengthen our hand. But the bottom line is this- Andy Carroll is class! And when he plays the Irons play! The whole team just buzzes! And on this basis we should move heaven and earth to make it so!

    • Carl Bateson says:

The fact is the deal agreed with Liverpool is £17 million wages would have to roughly match what he is making now

I personally think yes we should pay it, i think its big sam the one who should not be kept on. come on lets face it we are a passing team not a long ball team, if we played 4-4-2 we would be higher up the table look at the strikers we have signed in recent years all goalscorers yet we still play carlton cole as lone striker, nicky maynard was championship top goalscorer when at bristol city was never given a regular consistent chance, sam baldock had scored 7 goals in 4 games in pre season thats why we signed him, yet again never given a consistent place in team. Maiga prolific scorer in french division never given chnace to prove himself. i like carroll he brings more people in to play than what cole can. however if you play lone striker you need a goalscorer at the end of it. if you then played carroll and maiga i am sure we would watch the goals go in some support for andy carroll and carroll can then hold up the ball and knock them onto maiga to score. we struggled recently for midfielders and have played tomkins there, this would have been perfect oppurtunity to chnage formation. last point is cole is played far more games this season okay only 3 more starts but osme of his 9 sub appearances happened around 60- 70 mns still enough time to make an impact and score he just simply does not do it, the rest of the team is taking shape just need cole to go, potts to be 1st choice LB and allardyce to go and di canio in some that plays and manages the west ham way and has the west ham philosophy.

its precisely this kind of thinking that got Villa where they are at the moment imho. Hopefully the David’s being the businessmen that they are will care more about results that some abstract footballing philosophy. Football was always meant to be a physical game but for some reason some people want to turn it into ballet.
