Potts is ready

It was fair to say that today’s FA Cup 3rd round tie between West Ham United vs Manchester United had a lot of focus on the return of one man, Joe Cole. As great as he was on his second debut for us, for me it was once again, the emergence of the fast growing fans favourite, Dan Potts.

Once Big Sam had opted to recall the 18 year old back from his loan spell at Colchester United, it showed that he was either desperate, unable to purchase a left back in time, or suggesting that Potts is ready to take the step into the first team line up. I personally felt it was a case of he had no choice but to recall him to the squad because he was ready, otherwise he could have opted to play Mathew Taylor at left back, would he not?

Although, this could still be too soon for the young lad, he still managed to prove he has the grit and talent to compete with gifted players. Putting up with Rafael Da Silva (who isn’t great, but will run all day) Shinji Kagawa, Javier Hernandez, and Danny Welbeck the whole game is some challenge, yet he proved today that he has what it takes.

There was a couple of times you could tell he was slower than the opposing player, yet he was intelligent enough to put his body in the way or take that couple of steps back before hand to give him the extra couple of yards. Despite being sound defensively, it was his intent going forward that really caught my eye, despite having little experience in against the big teams, nothing stopped him from playing his usual game and you have to respect players like that. He looked to drive and play the one-two as often as possible and I can’t help but take my hat off to him.

For me I felt that for a player of his age, in his fourth appearance for the club, he showed great presence and composure off and on the ball. With the likes of James Tomkins (a player who has been his position and established himself), James Collins who has bundles of experience at Premier League level and Guy Demel who is improving with each game, playing alongside him, now might just be a good time to include him more often.

The number 33 barely put a foot wrong the whole game and was one of the standout performers for the Hammers, with pundits and fans sharing the same positive view. It’s great to see someone such as Dan Potts developing the way he is, too often now players with a lot of potential tend to fade away and never quite match up to what people expected, but if he keeps doing what he is doing, no doubt he will catch the eye on a larger scale and really win a place in the hearts of the West Ham faithful.

With talk linking us with Stephen Warnock and Martin Olsson (a player I hope we sign), it’s obvious Big Sam feels the full back positions are our two of the positions that need strengthening. One thing’s for sure the performance from both Demel and Potts will surely make him question what he really needs. Despite them both playing well I do feel another full back wouldn’t cause any harm and Olsson could just fit the bill.

A couple of things I just want to get off my chest (a little off topic), Joe Cole and James Collins were outstanding yesterday and compliments to them for the assists and goals. Great result, a shame it was 2-2 in the end, but you can’t fault Robin Van Persie’s ability, just shows the desperation from Sir Alex Ferguson, that he had to bring him and Ryan Giggs on. COYI! • Algy says:

Tough decision for SA, if he signs Olsson this would push Potts back to the bench and when Mcartney returns where does that leave him?

  • I think if Olsson is sign he will be the number one left back because he is a force. This would then put McCartney 2nd and Potts 3rd choice (as much as I hate to say it).

I was very impressed. Looked assured and comfortable on the ball. Little lightweight and needs to bulk up would be my feedback on him though: I do hope he makes the grade as his father was a legend!!!

  • Couldn’t agree more, but even though he was lightweight, he still had the fight.
