Jack’s back

|

The Welsh midfielder made his return to football earlier this week when he played for the Development squad in their final game of the U21 Premier League Group 1 stage. He played the whole of the first half in the 3-1 defeat to Norwich City on Monday night. Collison scored two goals in the Play-Off semi-final away win at Cardiff City last year and has been injured since the final against Blackpool due to long standing knee problem.

The 24 old spoke to whufc.com after the game and said, “It was great to be back out there again, I loved it. It was great to be playing football again, even though it was not the best conditions out there. I thought the boys did well and were unlucky to not to get a point out of it.”

It is a good feeling to see Collison back playing football and hopefully we will see him lining up for the first team in a few weeks time but the question is where would he fit into the team?

I feel that the best football Collison played for West Ham was when he was in a midfield four of himself, Scott Parker, Mark Noble and Behrami. The four of them were all able to switch positions and move around the pitch freely and play some wonderful football. A lot of his playing career at West Ham he has been used either left or right midfield which I don’t think is his best position. To get the most of his creativity we need him to be playing in the centre of midfield. But would he be able to push Noble, Nolan and a fit Mohamed Diame out of the team? I think not.

Obviously having Jack Collison back fully fit is a great thing for West Ham United and I am sure it is going to give Sam Allardyce a great big selection headache each week. One position I think he could play would be the Kevin Nolan role, feeding off the striker. He has a great footballing brain and like Nolan could find himself in those important positions to get the goals. The problem is the only way he would get into the team in that position would be if Nolan got injured.

We all know about the Diame situation and the buyout clause in his contract. There are rumours that we are going to be offering a much improved contract offer that will hopefully see him remain at the club. He is the driving force in the midfield for West Ham and we have noticed in recent weeks how important he is the to the team.

If we did end up selling Diame to another club I don’t think Collison could replace him in that role. He is too similar to Noble and he wouldn’t have another creativity pushing forward. If Diame stays and the rest of our midfielders all get fit we have a great depth in quality in that area and Allardyce will have huge problems selecting his team. This can only be a good thing for West Ham.

The midfield would include; Noble, Diame, Nolan, Collison, Vaz Te, Diarra, Jarvis, Benayoun, Taylor and O’Neil. That is a very strong midfield and provides us with different options and also means we have the depth to change formation if Big Sam ever felt like he wanted to.

Lets all hope that Collison can stay injury free from now on and turn into the player that we all know he can be.

Geoffrey sends his regards and thanks you for the kind gift. He has said that he will use it whenever it’s cold on the Moors or when it’s too humid at home in Pitsea!

Morris and Julia have now moved in and have experienced some issues with the electrics but are not blaming you! Although they said you didn’t replace the circuit board as instructed. Anyway there was only fire damage to the porch and front bay window so no real harm done.

Hope all is well and you recover in time for next year’s bowls season. We’re missing you down the green especially Ethel!

Have a happy birthday and a merry christmas.

    Yours

    Big Tony
