Same ol’ West Ham?

When you think of a football team, any team, a definite character trait is associated with it. When you think of West Ham, flaky comes to mind.

One week they will beat Manchester United, the following week they will lose against a lower league team in the cup. You just never know which West Ham would turn up.

But the first shoots of change and growth are slowly but surely beginning to emerge. West Ham has so far not lost twice on the trot this year. They have had disappointing displays against Swansea City and Wigan Athletic where they did fail to turn up, but in the following games put in a performance.

It was the same this week when they played Manchester City. I cannot remember the last time, if ever, I was so pleased by West Ham earning a 0-0 draw.

 

The array of talent that City has at their disposal is impressive, but team spirit cannot be bought, and West Ham’s spirit matched the wealth of the Premier League Champions.

Sam Allardyce deserves an enormous amount of credit in the way he has installed the ethos of working as a team, something that has been lacking in West Ham for years.

To see the likes of Yossi Benayoun getting stuck in like Billy Bonds epitomised the whole team in shutting out their feared attack was heart-warming.

To put things in perspective, the last time Manchester City fired a blank was twenty games ago! If Big Sam is left to work unhindered and given time, a new character trait may soon emerge: Tough to beat with flair.
