FIVE things we learnt about the Hammers against QPR

|

1) Trust in Jussi

Jussi Jaaskelainen was inspired tonight, it wasn’t the finest performance that he will ever make, he was called into action to deal with some very tricky shots and he passed the test. Fair enough, it wasn’t a clean sheet but Taarabt’s goal was a very well taken shot and that is what Premier League midfielders can do to you, take their chances when called upon. We had our doubts before the season, admittedly I was hoping to see young Stephen Henderson take the goalkeeper spot, but after that performance and the other first five games of the year, I believe that he may be the quality Premier League experience we need.

2) Cole must take his chances

I doubt I was the only one who didn’t jump up in anger when Carlton Cole missed a great chance to put us 3-1 up and potentially kill the game off. He must start taking chances, this is the Premier League, I need not remind you. We will get punished by much better teams if we don’t take our chances, against Sunderland we didn’t do so and we should of won that game. Carlton was bright in the first half and did cause problems, but in the second he should have made sure that he hammered in a final blow.

3) Guy Demel can be trusted

Guy Demel is turning into an important player for us, he isn’t the quickest or the strongest, but he is very technically gifted. When he can deal and cut out a problem before it occurs he can be pivotal. Once he is one to one with a winger, he doesn’t dive in and give away silly free kicks, which Joey O’Brien did early in the first half, but he stands up to the man and deals with his man effectively.

4) Mark Noble, finally showing his raw talent

One of the key factors into the success that we are having at the start of the season is the fact that our midfield is very dominant. Though tonight Mark Noble was finally showing what he can provide to the team. Mark Noble is a brilliant ball winning midfielder; it shows with the fact that he has made the most tackles so far this season with 33. He can distribute the ball as well, but only when he uses his talent for seeing a pass, not when he slows down the play and plays off target passes. More performances like that one from Mr. West Ham and he surely will start to be recognized by the on looking Roy Hodgson.

5) Test Passed

The last 30 minutes of tonight’s test was real challenge for us. This is a test that makes you a Premier League side, almost gives you an indication of whether you can survive the League and the problems it will throw up at you.

2-1 up and a resurgent home side are desperate to take all 3 points, a draw at least will be what the opposition are looking for and with a bit of luck, grit and determination, we succeeded tonight. The Premier League is a slog, it is the toughest League to survive in and with the money in the Premier League next year, the drop could be the most costly it has ever been. We passed, and that will give Sam Allardyce some pleasure in seeing that his side can survive tough tests.

Great result from the lads last night, i hate to say it but a Grant or Zola team would’ve cracked under the pressure and i think that is the difference between now and our last few seasons in the PL. We are no longer a soft touch and we mixed resilience with skill to dominate a very tricky away fixture against a side desperate for points. 11 points from 6 games is a fantastic start and we go in to saturdays game 2 points above the gooners without any pressure on us which gives the players a great chance to cause and upset. And i bet Wenger isn’t looking foward to seeing Carroll back ….

I can’t agree with your conclusions about Jussi. He made a couple good saves last night, but all keepers are good shot stoppers otherwise they wouldn’t be goalkeepers.

He flapped at 2 crosses last night, and took out Winston Reid in the process. The real test of keepers is whether they can take the pressure of the defence by coming to collect crosses, and Jussi fails this test.

yep … Jusi is a weak link .Very poor kicking and hopeless collecting crosses. When do you stop making excuses for the donkey . Cole is crap. He contributed absolutely nothing to the game and creates pressure by constantly giving away fouls …and moaning . …. worst striker in league .
