Nothing short of a disaster

|

Before 3pm, West Ham sat in seventh place in the Premier League. A win at Wigan Athletic would have seen us sit proudly in fourth place.

Are you on Facebook? Excellent, so are we http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/ForeverWestHamcom/200938616608282

My last article was entitled: “Wigan Away is Vital.” Not vital because we could have sat in a Champions League position for a while – although it would have been nice. The game was vital because we needed the points to give us a cushion before the difficult batch of games that follow. And if anyone hasn’t checked the coming fixtures, they are: Manchester City, Newcastle United, Stoke City, Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool, WBA and Arsenal.

One can only describe West Ham’s performance yesterday as poor. And the question I would like to ask is why? Wigan Athletic have won one game all season. They haven’t won at home – so why did they beat West Ham so easily?

Looking for experience? Just want to be heard outside of the Boleyn? We are currently looking for writers, drop us an email at foreverwestham@snack-media.com for more details

The reason, in my opinion, stems from the Capital One Cup and Sam Allardyce’s team selection. Wigan has been poor this year, but went to West Ham and won 4-1.

So before this game, their players are thinking: “Oh, it’s only West Ham, we beat them 4-1 at their place.”

It is psychological, and that is very important in sport. Their players didn’t think, well, it was a poor side that their manager sent out, only that they beat West Ham easily.

Ever dreamt about getting paid for reading about West Ham? Well now you can make dreams a reality http://bit.ly/ffc-foreverwestham-lp

And if anyone is unclear at the poor side Allardyce put out that evening, this sums it up: Gary O’Neil was captain for the majority of the second half!

So West Ham has wasted a massive chance to bank three points; and looking ahead to the next nine games, it is difficult to see where the next three are coming from.

losing to wigan is a disaster and all down to a side we picked a month ago?

    absolutely pathetic article

    grow up

In contrast to your opinions about Wigan, if you had asked their fans you would have found out that they have actually been largely impressed with their performances this season. As far as they’re concerned results have not matched performances.

    • Gary Troia says:

And that is the point, Gaz: Football is all about opinions.

      • ck says:

hard to argue yours though on the evidence available. wigan have played consistently as well as we did this past saturday, it’s only the scorelines that have been different.

not sure how you see wigan as an easy 3 points anymore honestly. especially if recent results are any indication…

The thing is, ck, if you are playing well, as everbody is saying about Wigan, then something is wrong if you have only won one game. It is the same when people talk about the top sides playing badly but still winning. I just said that with the games coming up, West Ham should have put everything into the Wigan game, but they didn’t. And the point I was trying to make with them winning so easily in the Capital Cup, is that they would have been more confident against us because of theat win.

As I said last week a point would have been a good result,Wigan had not been playing that bad,bad runs don’t last ,hammers have played well to a degree ,but we were saying we lost to a good arsenal side that same are seal side have not looked so great since then,I am very worried about coming fixtures.

I’m begining to agree with you. I now think I was being far too optimistic. And yes, the coming fixtures do look very daunting.

Gary, we tend to forget that Wigan have been in the EPL for a long time. They came up with us in 2005 and have somehow stayed despite all the odds against them. That alone should have told all of us that to expect three points is asking for trouble.

And while the upcoming fixtures are obviously brutal, I suspect we will have a surprise or two on the upside. Not much, just a taste of success. Im hoping for 20 points come Christmas. 17th place is still OK by me.

    • Gary Troia says:

Dave, at no point did I infer that Wigan would be a certain three points, or that it would be easy, I said that the game was “vital” because of the following tough batch of games.

  • Nick Spillmsn says:

The problem lay with playing very predictably to an isolated lone striker. The fault lay completely with the way the manager wants the team to play! He packs out the midfield to stiffle the opposition with our ‘flair/attacing midfielder performing a defencive role! Rather than just punting the ball to the front man team mates need to join him and the passer needs to make sure this is happening!

The Wigan victory had nothing to do with oh it’s only Wetspam we beat them 4-1. It was a victory because Wigan played beautiful passing football and Wetspam booted the ball up the pitch ie Fat Sams idea of football and proper football won over lump it up the field and hope football. Thank god I don’t have to pay and watch rubbish like Wetspam every week.

This article is slightly apocalyptic. It was a bad performance and we just never got going in the game. But I wouldn’t describe it as a ‘disaster’
