Transfer window sales backfiring?

|

West Ham United were one of the most busiest teams in terms of players moving in both directions as the window came to a close, however have the sales of Sam Baldock and Nicky Maynard started to haunt us as we struggle to find the back of the net.

At the beginning of the seasons we had far too many strikers on our books and rightly so soon saw many of them depart in their own directions, however, if you go by recent performances it seriously looks like we made a slight mistake selling as many as we did.

The departures of Freddie Sears and Franck Nouble are ones that had to have happened, as they just didn’t appear to cut it or force their way into contention for a first team place, my slight concern is still; were the sales of Nicky Maynard and Sam Baldock good for the club? I think not.

Here is how I see it… I’m not saying we should have kept both of them but when you look at the type of players they both are; with that instinctive poacher approach to their game and compare them to the dominating presence of Andy Carroll and the power of Carlton Cole, maybe what they had to offer is what we appear to be missing now.

When Andy Carroll is fit no doubt he will be drafted straight back into the starting line-up, as Cole just isn’t cutting it this year. I am a Cole fan and don’t get me wrong I love his drive and passion he has, but he does lack that finesse in front of goal and when you look at Baldock and the impact he has had for his new club I can’t help but question the sale and think maybe, just maybe he could have hacked it in the Premier League.

Then you have to think about the tactics that Big Sam likes to play and think could Baldock fit into it, I personally don’t think it would work as much as I think he is what we need, but he is a too small for Sam’s liking, which is why I believe out of him and Maynard the latter would have been the better option to have kept, as I am sure he is capable of playing a lone striker if needed and still provide that natural striker instinct.

Ideally I feel it would have been a great choice to have kept Maynard and then play him up top with Cole (with Carroll when he is fit) as on the wings we have some real flair, not to mention the fantastic crossing ability of Mathew Jarvis and providing him with two targets to hit in the box would surely help our chances of finding the net?

It’s frustrating to see that we are always relying on Kevin Nolan to save us, it makes me feel like his becoming our Steven Gerrard and without him we would just crumble like Liverpool do and that’s a habit I don’t want to continue (the relying, not the goal scoring) as we could soon find ourselves in trouble as a result of it.

I know there are plenty of Cole fans who won’t agree with me, however I can’t help but feel his days are numbered as we seriously need someone who can provide us with a decent tally of goals each year, I hope he can find his form and prove me wrong but time will tell.

Nicky Maynard is out for the season with cruciate Knee ligament damage. Terrible shame for the lad but maybe we knew there was a weakness there ?

Maynard out with long term injury and would have Baldock cut it in the Premier League, have my doubts.
We have a much better strike force now. The one point I do agree with Cole, very, very poor and apart from a few golden months under Zola he is at best average.

How have we got a better strike force then if you don’t believe cole can cut the mustard we only have Carroll or maiga then??

We need to raise some cash towards signings

Would you rather have Maynard and Baldock or Jarvis and Carroll

Abut of a poor thread this considering Maynard is out for the season now boldock granted massive miss him said that even when he wasn’t starting last year what is do to have him back now he would have buried at least 2 of the chances we had Saturday just gone!! Get rid I 4 strikers n bring one in not really good sense if you ask me seen as if Carroll got injured every one knows cole can’t step up to the plate and get the goals we need nor will maiga he seems like another cole if you ask me so I don’t really think Sam had thought that one through but wanted Carroll so bad properly would have sold the whole back line to have got him

maybe if cole learnt to head the ball in the oppositions box as well as he does in our own might be a different story.

Maybe the time is right for Rob Hall to be given a fair crack, I do think his progress had a bit to do with letting Baldock and Maynard go so let’s give him a proper go.
