Throw the youngster in at 3pm?

|

It could be the making of the young full back, Jordan Spence is product of West Ham’s illustrious academy and this year might just be the start of a great career for Spence.

We are undoubtedly weak in the full back positions; we have no real quality at right back and no one with real long term Premier League experience. Guy Demel and Joey O’Brien were our two regulars at this position last year whilst Spence spent a year out on loan getting first team football with Bristol City. Which benefited him, but for me it is time that we gave young Jordan the full time role at right back.

Demel was a very experienced signing for West Ham United, he played for Ivory Coast at the last World Cup and he has had a more than successful career in Germany playing for Hamburg and Dortmund. He has had his most success at Hamburg where he played in the Champions League and in the Uefa Cup. He played well for us last year when he was given a role in the team and he looked very solid, until the Play-Off Final where he could have been wearing a Tangerine shirt. He looked very suspect against pace, and he made his best attempts to gift a goal to the Seasiders. This is worrying that someone who we signed as an apparent Premier League full back dropping down a division to help us could falter so easily under pressure. For this reason, I hope that he isn’t going to become our first choice right back.

Joey made a very promising start to his career at West Ham United, he was signed by Sam Allardyce after his association with the Irishman at Bolton Wanderers. The 26 year old has been injury plagued and it seems that he has been around for ages, but only 26 he will be soon hitting the prime stages of his career. He started last year as our number one right back and he started the year well, but when his injury plagued career struck again, he was starting to show signs of a Championship full back, not one that we can rely and use in the Premier League.

So, I feel that we should start our season with Jordan Spence as our number one right back. He has the quality and the youth on his side that could lead to a very successful career at West Ham and maybe establish himself as a regular in the team this year. Though, you may doubt the inexperience that he has, but I would say that you should credit him with the fact that he has played for England at every youth level, and captained every youth level apart from the Under-21 level. Where, I’m sure that in the not too distant future he will go on to have a good period of growth in. We need to trust in Spence, if we don’t give him the chance now when he has the ability and the chance to make the position his own, we may never do so. Signing a Premier League quality right back may be the obvious solution, but in Spence, we have the chance to built a Premier League quality right back.

Nice idea, never going to happen, Sam seems not to have much faith in the youth players, He may have good reason and he may not, we just have trust his selection

This is a key year for the lad. However I think much of it will be in the development side and making a few sub and carling cup appear appearances. I’m not a fan of Joey and thought he was exposed a number of times last season. It’s a position I am concerned about going into the start of the season.
