Positive signs from Momo

|

Possibly West Ham’s best coup of the transfer window so far was the free signing of Wigan Athletic’s former ‘anchorman’ Mohamed Diame. Not only did he impress during his time at the DW, but he has been guiding his nation; Senegal, to the quarter finals of the Olympics. Next up for Momo is Mexico for a place in the semi finals.

Mohamed Diame began his career in France at RC Lens and then eventually ended up at Rayo Vallecano. During his only season there, he helped Rayo finish mid-table of the Spanish Segunda División. There were rumours that the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Arsenal were interested in Momo, but it was Wigan who signed him, for a fee of around £4m. Momo made his debut on the same day of his transfer to Wigan, in a 5–0 defeat to Manchester United. He scored his first goal for Wigan against Sunderland on 6 February 2010.

Momo attracted interest from various Premier League clubs including Liverpool during his time at Wigan, but the Hammers managed to snap-up the Senegalese midfield enforcer who will add some pace and strength to the Hammers’ midfield. I was lucky enough to see him play for Senegal at Wembley against Uruguay, where Senegal were expected to lose heavily. However they showed their class when they defeated Uruguay 2-0, following two goals from Konaté (who the Hammers have supposedly made an initial £1.5m pound bid).

Momo was in the heart of the Senegal defence, tackling hard and showing the fans at Wembley why he’s captain of his national team. Not only is he a hard tackling, defensive midfielder, but he also has a great turn of pace and impressive ball control. On many occasions he looked to go one way, dropped a shoulder and accelerated off the other way, leaving his man for dead. There were tricks and flicks from Momo which was followed the cry of “Olé!” from the crowd as the Senegalese did Africa proud during an eventful night at Wembley.

The only criticism I can have of Momo is that his passing was sometimes a little wayward, but this is a small criticism in an otherwise glistening performance. Let’s hope that this is just pre-season rustiness from our anchorman who will play a very important role in the Hammers’ midfield next season.
