FIVE things West Ham need to do to ensure Premier League survival

|

1. Get Robert Green to sign a new contract! I think this could be a monumental task for the two Davids, but it’ll be a real boost if Greeno signs a new contract. He has been a solid performer this season and I don’tthink a move abroad would do him any favours in regular placement in the England squad.

2. Get Thomas Ince – This isn’t exactly essential, but he gave us a real headache in the final and was the only one of their players who really caused problems. He’s a huge talent and I think Blackpool will certainly receive some interest from Premier League sides. I’d also like to sign Henri Lansbury permanently as I think he’ll struggle once again to get into the Arsenal side and he needs to be at a club that won’t just ship him out on loan – plus he’s already settled at West Ham so I think we’d have an advantage over other teams hoping to sign him.

3. I think we need to get rid of some of the fringe players, either by putting them on loan or selling them. We’re still not in a fantastic financial situation and some of our current players simply won’t cut it in the Premier League. Sadly, I think Sam Baldock may be one of them, and feel like he’s never had a proper chance. Younger players like Dan Potts will benefit from being loaned out to clubs in the lower tiers to give them regular match experience before appearing in the best league in the world.

4. Keep up the team spirit – During the play-offs,the team spirit has been phenomenal and all of the players were performing to their best, all wanting to get promotion so much. If they carry on the spirit and determination into the 2012-13 season then I think the teams towards the top of the table may actually find us quite hard to break down. Kevin Nolan’s charisma means that he’ll be a much more passionate than Matthew Upson ever was. By the way, how is warming up that Stoke bench Matty?

5. The fans need to give the type of support that the team got at Wembley – I truly believe that the fans were the 12th man on Saturday – at some points the players actually seemed quite defeatist and I think the fans spurred them on to give those final pushes that resulted in the winning game. If we all give that kind of phenomenal support from thestart, the players will want to do it for us.

Point number 5 should be Point number 1!

Point number 5 shouldn’t be there at all. I was actually disappointed by the lack of noise our fans made on Saturday. 2nd half we were very quiet. Making lots of noise at the end once we’ve won doesn’t count as good support. After the Blackpool goal there was a 20-25 minute period where the atmosphere was dead from a west ham perspective….that’s when we should have been making the noise, that’s when the team needed our support!!

    • CHIEFIRONHAMMER says:

Were you there Simon? Certainly it went quiet for a while because we let in a sloppy goal and Sam seemed uncertain of how to deny Balckpool the midfield but it was the noise in the last 15 -20 minutes from us that galvanised the players

. The result: Nolan hit the bar followed by us scoring.

I like Lansbury as a player, but if he wasn’t getting into our team in the Championship what’s the point of buying him for the Premiership?

Our biggest problem is that there seems to be no plan or desire to advance young players like Potts, Spence, Hall, Morrison into our first team. That means we have to spend, spend spend to build our squad, which is madness.

I’ve said elsewhere we should be looking to spend what money we have on two or three really top class players rather than seven or eight average ones to fill the squad. Buy two good full backs, a top class central midfielder like Joe Cole and a couple of experienced free transfers at centre half and centre forward (Yakubu?) and trust in the best of the Youth Team to fill out the squad.

The four players I’ve mentioned (and possibly some others) are surely good enough to be playing five or six games a season as developing back-up to the main first team squad? We won’t know unless we try it.

I think i agree with you Tonka, before reading what you had to say, i was thinking that we def need to sign a left back and right back, these are essential in my opinion, george will be ok cover as young potts would benifit from regular first team football on loan, prob in league 1, and right back we currently have no one..

I also believe we need to sign 2 good centre backs, one to play beside tomkins, the other to provide competition and cover with young winston.

i disagree abt Landsbury, i feel championship is played at a more frenetic pace than premiership and therefore he’s skill could be very useful, plus he’s part of a wonderful team spirit,so good to keep that in place. I do agree though re a quality centre mid player, personally would love benayoun back or a very similar player, always felt we’ve never really replaced him..

Love young ince and phillips in the blackpool team, unproven at highest level, but great pace. Upfront with carew going i feel steven fletcher from wolves could be a good bit of business, 11 prem goals last year for the bottom team, seems like a sam sort of player too.. Also Matt jarvis looked really good young player to me..

It would be easy to name better players, but you have to be realistic…! what do you all think? who would you like to see us sign?

      • Tonka says:

I like Ince as well but I don’t see how he will fit into the way we are likely to play. I can’t see BFS playing an out and out winger too often. Players who can play inside but also offer width are probably a better bet. I really like Whittingham and I think Saha and or Moses would be good signings for attacking players. I’d rather see us sign promising young players than old lags. We had plenty of experience in the squad already.

I dream of a Joe Cole return. It would lift the whole club and he would be brilliant for us. I liked Benayoun as well but he’s a bit lightweight.

I’d like to see Tomkins and Reid given a chance together in the Premiership but we definitely need some experienced cover in that position.

Not sure about Jarvis – does he offer much more than Matty Taylor on the left?

Isn’t it great to be talking about potential signings rather than potential sales?

  • essex iron says:

Ageee with all pointers especially point number 2 Get Ince from Blackpool, the guys trained and played with liverpool..which means premire league experience , and now the experience he gained with B.pool…i think its a match made in heaven…we can still boo him when he plays for us which would be our signiture chant for him …#

but in all seriousness i think he is ready and Matty Tayler wont be able to sustain a full season we will have to rest him to get the best from Matty.

Ince in Claret and Blue…yes please makes sense …the pool will give us a good deal maybe send a few there way ???

  • Alex Partner says:

Just on your point about lansbury and ince there both good players in the championship but we have to go and get in prem quality to stay up and get in to eufa cup in a season or two !! COYFI !!
