Five things that could happen if West Ham do not get promoted

|

The idea of not being promoted is a dreadful feeling for all West Ham United fans. At the start of the season many fans and pundits predicted that West Ham will get automatic promotion. However, automatic promotion does not look possible and West Ham will have to face the play-offs if they want to regain their Premier League status. This means there is a possibility that West Ham will not clinch promotion at all. This article will look at five things that could happen if promotion is not achieved.

Big Sam might leave Upton Park

Karen Brady stated that Big Sam’s job as West Ham manager is safe and he will remain manager next season, even if he fails to get the club back to the Premier League. The West Ham fans have started to get restless with Big Sam’s tactics and the team’s failure to win games. Furthermore, if Big Sam fails to get promotion the fans may get completely impatient with him. As a result the board may have no choice to sack the man they brought to replace Avram Grant last year. Big Sam may decide to resign if he fails to get the club promoted straight away and he may also consider

resigning because of the tension between him and the fans which has been heated in recent weeks. What is certain at this point is that if West Ham fail to get promotion this year and also fail to gain promotion next year, then Big Sam’s time as West Ham

manager is over.

Players may decide to leave

Even though West Ham are hovering in the Championship, they still have a handful of players that can play their trade in the Premier League. West Ham’s academy graduates Mark Noble and James Tomkins may decide to move clubs to further their careers’. Players such as Kevin Nolan and Robert Green will definitely create an interest amongst Premier League clubs. Furthermore, the club may decide to off load these players if they receive a good fee for them. The transfer fees will help to decrease the club’s current debt because these players will be the highest earners at the club. This will result in West Ham having to again rebuild a totally new team for next season.

The club’s debt may increase

Being stuck in the Championship will not help the club’s financial situation. It is no secret that the club is in major debt although David Gold and David Sullivan have decreased it since they took charge of the club. Being in the Premier League is the cash cow for any football club. Not being in the big league will deny the club vitalincome from match day sales and increased television profits. If West Ham fail to gain promotion back to the Premier League, they will be missing out on critical income that could possibly help to decrease their current debt. This may not be good

news for West Ham in the long run because there is always a likelihood of going into administration if the debts do increase out of control.

Olympic Stadium move may collapse

Sullivan and Gold’s long term ambition for club is to relocate to the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 Olympic Games. However, if the club remains in the Championship for another season then this move may collapse. West Ham are struggling to reach full capacity at Upton Park which holds up to 36,000 people so they will certainly have problems filling a 60,000 capacity stadium. West Ham may not be able to afford the rent for the Olympic Stadium because they will not generate enough income from

being in the Championship and as a result, the club may decide to remain at Upton Park.

Fans will get more restless

No fan enjoys watching their team being in the second tier of English football, especially if you are a West Ham fan and have been watching your team play in the Premier League for many years. West Ham fans have built up a reputation of being fans that are hard to please even at the best of times. If the club remains in the Championship for another season the fans may get more restless then they already are with the team and the management. What does not help the situation is that the club has one of the highest ticket prices in the League. The fans will not be content

on paying high prices for tickets for another season in the Championship, especially if Big Sam is still in charge and he continues to play his trademark long ball football like he has done this season.

Apart from stating the obvious is it such a bad thing that BFS leaves? People didn’t want Di Canio because of his inexperience but his passion shines through and loves the club, should of gave him a go.

Also about the fans. After we failed to gain promotion in the 03/04 season, the fans were still turning up the following season and that belief got us promoted. We do need to get behind the team but when they are playing poor football and losing vital and easy games, its hard to show your appreciation. We do deserve better as a fan but the players need to work harder to make sure we get promoted, even if it’s through the play-offs, we need to go up.

Di Canio’s not that inexperienced. Brendan Rogers was appointed Swansea manager with 13 months experience elsewhere (7 months at Watford, 6 at Reading)and not much success (he was sacked by Reading. He got Swansea promoted at the end of his first season.

Bullshit. We will turn up whatever league we are in. We are not fickle Manure, Chelski or Spuds fans. Not everyone is obssessed with being in the Premier League, only fans from the last 20 years, and if you believe that “No fan enjoys watching their team being in the second tier of English football, especially if you are a West Ham fan and have been watching your team play in the Premier League for many years. “, then you’re not the type of fan we need or want
