FIVE West Ham players that will want to forget the 2011/2012 campaign

|

With the season about to end many footballers across England and Europe will be reflecting back on the season they just had, whether it was an excellent season or a poor one. At West Ham there are few players that did not live up to expectations, not

settled at the club after joining at the start of the season or they suffered a prolonged injury forcing them to be on the sidelines. This article will list five players that may look at the current season with a feeling of disappointment.

1. Frédéric Piquionne

Signed last season by Avram Grant, Piquionne managed to score nine goals in a frustrated season that saw West Ham relegated to the nPower Championship. He started this season as one of West Ham’s main front-line strikers but failed to make a significant

impact in the starting line up. He looked disinterested at the best of times and never showed signs of improving. He made 20 appearances this season scoring only 2 goals and he received one red card against his former club Portsmouth. He definitely has

had a disappointing season in a claret and blue shirt and he will be the first one to reiterate that.

2. John Carew

Carew was snapped up as a free agent at the start of the season and has struggled in his short time at West Ham. He has made over twenty appearances this season and only managed to score 3 goals in a frustrated campaign for the former Norwegian international. He has been suffering from back injuries for a large part of the season and will be in a quick hurry to forget his first and perhaps only season at Upton Park.

3. Freddie Sears

This will be another season that Sears will be disappointed with himself because he has once again failed to establish himself in the West Ham team. Many thought the young man had a great future at West Ham when he scored on his debut back in

2008 but has struggled ever since. He was given the opportunity to help West Ham’s promotion push this season but failed to establish a starting role in the team. He was often played on the right wing earlier in the season as Big Sam preferred to play one

forward up front. He was loaned out to Colchester United later in the season making that his fourth loan move in three years. Sears may feel at the end of the season that he may not be given another opportunity to prove that he has future at Upton Park.

4. Guy Demel

Demel signed a two-year deal at West Ham at the start of the season with an option of a third. He has seen his first season at West Ham hampered with injuries and he did not make his debut until late November. The versatile defender has only managed to

make 3 appearances in an injury hit season. He will be more than happy for the season to end and be fresh for the following season for West Ham. Whether that will be in the Championship or the Premier League remains to be seen.

5.Carlton Cole

Many West Ham fans and football pundits expected Cole to shine in the Championship and help West Ham gain automatic promotion. Cole decided to stay at Upton Park and he started the season well scoring four goals in his first four starts of the season. Fans started to believe that Cole will score goals consistently for the first time in his career and possibly push for the top goal scorer accolade. However, goals started to dry up and West Ham’s push for automatic promotion started to look slim. Thus far this season Cole has made 36 appearances scoring 10 goals and has 4 assists. At the start of the season, Cole would have set his targets higher for his first season in the Championship. He has struggled to find the net against average teams in the league which is quite simply a poor statistic for a player many believe is a Premier League standard player. However, with West Ham quite possibly having to fight promotion via the play-offs, Cole has enough games to score goals and make a real contribution to help the club clinch promotion. Unlike the other players on this list Cole has the opportunity to turn a bad season into a reasonably good one.

I would add Jack Collison to that list. Been a shadow of his former self since he returned from his injury. Players like him and Cole should really shine in this league – but haven’t
