FIVE things we learnt against Watford

|

We don’t thrive under pressure – We, as I’m sure you all know, had the chance to go top last night with Southampton only managing to draw with Ipswich Town on Tuesday night. But once again, we couldn’t capitalise on our chance to be in the champions position. I don’t know whether there’s a problem with the team’s mental preparation ahead of games or they just choke once they hit the pitch, but we can’t let the occasion overcome us. If it comes down the to the final game on whether we go up automatically or not, I want to feel confident that the team will thrive and not buckle under the pressure.

Our squad is really important – We don’t have a single player who has scored 10 or more goals this season. Like Big Sam said last night, if we had a Ricky Lambert in our team we would be top of the league comfortably. But I think it’s almost a good thing that we’ve got various players that can score, as at least we’ve got to 2nd place without a prolific scorer. But er, if we could sort one out for next season that’d be good too!

Saturday is even more important now – We cannot drop any more points this week. Reading are on a fantastic run and we literally just can’t afford to get less than 3 points. Kevin Nolan said in his post match interview after the Cardiff game that we weren’t just looking to go up, but we were looking to catch up with Southampton and be victorious as champions of the Championship. If the team really want to achieve this then we cannot let Reading catch up. Our game in hand away at Peterborough is also massively important and could see us clinching the top spot. And I for one am bloody glad that it is away from home now!

Sam was right to buy two more strikers in the transfer window – Vaz Te saved the day last night, after what I’ve heard was a rather lacklustre effort from Cole, who struggled to win the ball. The fact that Vaz Te had a good scoring record at Barnsley, with 10 goals in 22 appearances will hopefully mean that he can repeat at Upton Park. Maynard has looked pacy and hungry for the ball since his arrival, and I think that increased competition is going to be a benefit for us.

This league is extremely tough to get out of – Ok so we pretty much knew this already but last night showed that even if a team is many places below us, that does not mean that they are easy competition. I think the fact that we had such a good run and then nearly got nothing out of the game was disappointing but I really, really don’t think the booing is helping. We’re 2nd in the league – as far as I’m concerned being in line for automatic promotion isn’t a booable offence!

I agree. How can it be for a team to play in front of their home crowd, knowing unless they win they’ll be booed off the pitch. Maybe that’s why our home form has faltered while our away form has blossomed. If you truly support West Ham …. Stop demoralising the team. We are second with a game in hand, I for one would have taken that at the start of the season… This is a very difficult league. Stop the booing and start supporting.

I think it’s worse when we get on there backs during the game. I can’t see how that helps but it can be frustrating at times so i doubt it will stop. booing is abit unnecessary but the expectation levels are very high in this league and to a certain extent players have got to get used to that. But we need to get behind them if we really want results to come.
