The Last Time: Before we knew Avram

Portsmouth 1-1 West Ham United

Webber Upson

It’s almost two years to the day when two relegation threatened sides squared up at Fratton Park in a tight encounter.

Portsmouth, led by Avram Grant were facing increasing financial pressure and having lost a series of high profile players over the summer, their squad just wasn’t quite the same as the FA Cup winning side from two years earlier.

West Ham were facing a second season syndrome under Granfranco Zola, after finishing 9th in his first season, West Ham found themselves just two places above the drop zone and well and truly in a relegation battle.

Matthew Upson had put West Ham ahead after 52 minutes but typical of a relegation battle Portsmouth battled back and thanks to Danny Webber’s first goal for the Portsmouth earned a point for the home side.

As things turned out, it was another point towards survival for Zola and West ham, but Portsmouth, who were later docked nine points, couldn’t save themselves from the dreaded drop.

Portsmouth manager Avram Grant, who did manage to take Pompey to the FA Cup final, would return to the Premier League with West Ham the next season and earned himself back to back relegations.
