Reasons to be Cheerful

|

So we’re at the half-way stage of this gruelling marathon that is the Championship 11/12 season. We’re sitting just off an automatic promotion spot and if you ask me we’re in a fantastic position to attack the next 22 games.

I’m buoyed by the fact we have key playing personnel returning to that Claret and Blue shirt over the coming weeks…Collison, Baldock and Taylor all of whom have missed our somewhat stuttering Xmas programme will return in January to give the league’s best squad even more options and depth. This news is coupled by the fact that we also have long term absentees returning to the fold like Gary O’Neil and Henri Lansbury both of whom will act as new signings due to their lack of involvement in the first half of the campaign. Lansbury in particular is a great talent and a match winner. So before we’ve even opened our cheque-book the squad is set for a major boost over the coming weeks.

The other major reason to be cheerful is the fact that Gold and Sullivan are willing to personally fund Big Sam as he chases down the players he feels will get us over the line. Bids for Jordan Rhodes and Peter Whittingham over the last few days is proof indeed that the David’s are willing to put their hands in their pockets to secure the seasons only goal of automatic promotion. We already have the strongest squad in the division, key players returning from the treatment table and from the proverbial sin bin and we’re still adding to the squad from a position of strength…whilst there’s no such thing a certainty in football you do get the feeling of a looming sense of inevitability.

I don’t think any side is going to run away with the league like Newcastle did a couple of years ago; mainly due to the fact that the division is a lot more competitive than it was when the Magpies stormed it. But I do see within this West Ham team a side with more quality and depth than anyone else, I see a club that’s willing to back its manager to bring in reinforcements for the war of attrition that the Championship ultimately is and lastly I see a side that will eventually wrestle top spot from the Saints.

Whilst 2011 was a year to forget 2012 should be a year to remember.
