Goals, Goals, Goals

|

So we’re midway through January and George John is the only new acquisition for the promotion chasing Irons…Saturday’s 0-1 win over Pompey at Fratton Park was the EIGHTH consecutive fixture in which we’ve failed to score more than one goal.

Striking reinforcements are desperately needed if we are to finally usurp Southampton at the top of the table. Whilst we failed to kill off Pompey; the Saints in a similar position: the opposition down to ten men and away from home, managed to get the goals to break Nottingham Forest’s resistance. We however toiled and laboured till the final whistle went despite having a man advantage for the last half hour.

We’re being linked with a different striker every day from Yannick Sagbo to Marvin Sordell and yet so far nothing has materialised. Messer’s Gold and Sullivan have taken it upon themselves to personally fund Big Sam during this particular window and yet the new striker we’re so
desperate for continues to elude us.

If the recent returns of Scholes and Henry to their respective old stomping grounds has taught us anything it’s that it’s incredibly difficult to buy players in January who will improve your side. Though one does have to ask if the reported 3 million offered for Jordan Rhodes was really going to entice Huddersfield to part with their talismanic front man?

I actually think that since they’ve been at the club Gold and Sullivan have done good business in January windows; anyone remember Ilan? The Brazilian striker we signed two years ago; he scored vital goals to keep us up in the 09/10 season and of course last year there was that man Demba Ba who made an immediate impact after his arrival from Hoffenheim.

Our inability to stick the ball in the back of the net cost us last month as we only won one fixture out of five; more options are clearly needed the caveat to that is we will have to pay over the odds to get our man. The question is are the powers that be prepared for this? The evidence so far would suggest not.
