Settling for Sam?

|

Apparently there were chants at the weekend of ‘Sam out’, but I was at the game and can’t say that I actually heard any. But anyway, it would appear that, despite being joint top, some of our fans want Mr. Allardyce to make a swift exit. Harsh or deserved? Well, I have to say I do understand both sides of the argument, and think we should settle for Big Sam for the moment.

I know he doesn’t play our style of football. I mean, he really doesn’t. It’s got to the point where my Dad is saying he won’t watch us for a while if we buy a single Bolton player in the transfer window. But, we’re winning at the moment. We’re joint top of the league! So why ruin a winning formula? Sam obviously knows what he’s doing, and it looks like we’ll head back up to the Premier League at the first attempt. Part of me thinks that we should play a bit of ugly football this season as long as it gets us to our goal.

But there’s another part which thinks, if Allardyce becomes a long term fixture at West Ham, we’ll completely lose our identity. We play football the ‘West Ham way’. Neutrals enjoy watching us; we just play in a really free flowing style really. Do we really want to become the next Bolton, or even worse, the next Stoke? I don’t think so! I don’t think we should hold on to big Sam for too long, or we’re at risk of losing the reasons the fans support the team in the first place.

I personally think that we should keep Sam for the moment, at least until the end of the season, and then his future should be decided. I feel harsh saying that as he’s doing the right thing at West Ham, but it’s just too clinical for me. We seem to go out there to score one goal and leave it at that. I want to see attacking, fluid football when I make my 2 hour trip to East London, and if Sam’s not the manager to deliver that then I personally am unsure about his future at the club. I don’t think the fans will be satisfied with it in the long term.

What pure drivel, in the land of make believe we can all want the impossible. So let’s get real even under Ron Greenwood we still lost matches, but the players were different class. Do fans really want to play and lose and end up in league one. Sam has changed the way the team plays to ensure that we can win matches. Give the 1-0 win rather than we played really good football but got beaten yet again. Think of playing in the premiership against clubs that grind out results. If we were top and points ahead would the idiots still be complaining, based on the opening article I would say yes. Get real “We are in the Championship”, and we are not attracting top class players, why because we cannot afford it. Even if we were in the Premiership would we pay outrageous salaries and put the club in in more debt. fans should realise this is a business just like any other, cash flow and balance sheets are something that have to be taken in to account. So we will try to pick up players for the right wages and get them to fit in. The style might not be the best, but its effective, and wins matches. yes it would be nice to go and win 3 nil but look at who we have up front, get realistic.
If we win 1-0 good, if we had been doing that in the Premiership we would not be where we are now.
So forget looking at the world through rose tinted glasses, the old days were not as good as the figments of your imaginations. The reality is now, and what we do about it. Let the manager do his job, he is proving to be pretty good at it.
There is still a long way to go to the end of the season, so I for one would take all of the 1-0 wins we can get.

Im a Bolton fan, 35 yrs and you would be mad to let Sam go, its rubbish all this long ball Bolton, it stems from clubs spending millions an millions and getting beat by “little old Bolton” with Sams foreign Army loans, Cb, 19th Jan is right, with these players we beat a good few London clubs home and away, and West Ham, more than they care to remember,

Jay, Jay Okocha, Hierro, Nolan, Anelka, Diouf, Djorkaeff, Campo, Stelios, Speed, hardly all long ball hoofers, hes the best man Manager, [other than happy Harry R], youll ever have, so sit back and enjoy this season, playing the way you like and want will come later, adios

  • Got to agree with Bolton1 we need to get promoted then look at who we can get in. I was getting fed up of playing well and losing 2-0 or soft unfit teams giving up two goal leads. I think that most teams come to U.P and play with 9 men behind the ball. a bit like when teams in the prem go to old trafford intent on spoiling and getting a point. The one area we need to improve is goals scored we are not clinical and are often left holding on for the last ten mins. BS has been quoted as saying ‘you get promoted on the amount of games you win 1–0’

Sam Allerdyce is the best thing that has happened to West Ham for decades. At last a manager who knows why we are playing the game, i.e to win! I have been a supporter since 1957, and the “West Ham way” is nothing but a myth. We can play pretty when we are winning, and if we need to ground out results to achieve our aim, and that is promotion, then so be it. Sam, keep up the good work!

also at no stage have we had our first choice side out there

Once we get Faubert and Taylor down the wings, with Cole and Baldock up front you’ll see a huge difference in our play

We’ve been playing 4 and sometimes 5 central midfielders because of injury and suspension

that takes away most of the width and pace tyou need for attractive football

BFS has been a revelation for us

The first competent manager we’ve had since John Lyall

Some of our fans need a reality check

We’re not a “Big” club although I believe with a bit of help from BFS we could become one
