Fairytale story over for this Hammers forward?

|

It is only natural for supporters to get excited over the emergence of one of their youth players into the first team and the expectations may be high on the player. When a record as good as Freddie Sear’s at youth and reserve level comes up, everyone around the club will be fascinated to see how he gets on at first team level.

However, the fairytale story has not arrived for Sears yet who burst onto the scene at Upton Park when he scored a debut winner against Blackburn Rovers four years ago now. Since then the pacey striker has gone out on loan at three different clubs and failed to score a single league goal for any of them, which resulted in very little interest in the 22-year-old this summer.

Sears has made nearly 80 league appearances in his career now and is no longer an up and coming youngster and has reached the stage where he has to step up and become a key player. That of course has not materialised and it is not just his goalscoring that has not been impressive. The England under-21 striker seems lightweight and almost afraid of getting involved when he does get a chance and although the majority of supporters have a soft spot for him, he doesn’t give them anything to cheer about.

His decline in the thoughts of everyone at West Ham must offer the sly hint that he is not longer needed/wanted at the club and it is time to move on. Youngsters such as Frank Nouble, Robert Hall and Cristian Montano have used their loan spells away from the club well and have all scored more goals in their careers than Sears already.

January is the perfect time for Sears to call it a day at Upton Park, especially with Sam Allardyce keen to add a striker to his squad ahead of a tough second half of the season where the club must earn promotion at the first attempt. Rumours circulating have involved Sears in a possible swap + money deal for our intended targets and so we may have seen the last of the ‘next Tony Cottee’ at Upton Park after his woeful display at Sheffield Wednesday last weekend.

he is just not good enough simple as. He will never amount to anything at the club, a League 2 player at best. definitely time for him to move on.

l know that freddy Sears is better than everyone thinks he has not been given a chance to show how good he is , hes only been given a week or two in the starting 11 but to show how good anyone is you have to give him at least 4-5 weeks then the club will know how good he is

Brilliant article Brad, really enjoy reading yours on here. Couldn’t agree more – he’d do well to move down a league or two and find his feet again.
