West Ham United may not have scouted summer signing Roberto before bringing him to the club, according to Football FanCast.
The online outlet claim that unlike Sebastien Haller, who was watched numerous times during his time at Eintracht Frankfurt, the decision to sign the Spaniard was left in the hands of Mario Husillos.
Football FanCast report that there was a feeling that co-owners David Sullivan and Gold had a lack of interest in the goalkeeping department over the summer, and they just acted on the words of Husillos and Manuel Pellegrini.
Roberto has started each Premier League game for the Hammers since Lukasz Fabianski was forced off injured in the 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.
OPINION
Well, this would surely confirm that the Hammers made numerous mistakes in the summer, some that they are paying the price for at this moment in time. First of all, the choice to allow Adrian to leave the club when his contract expired could have backfired, as he would have been the perfect replacement for the injured Fabianski, as he has already proved at Liverpool when Alisson was ruled out at the beginning of the season. Second of all, bringing Roberto to East London based on a spell that Husillos had with the stopper during their time at Malaga could be the downfall in recent months. The Spaniard has been nowhere near good enough in goal, as highlighted in the 3-0 defeat at Burnley in which he somehow conceded directly from a corner. Gold and Sullivan might not be happy with the club’s recruitment team based on this, but the fact that they may not have taken an interest in signing keepers this summer shows that they only have themselves to blame.
