West Ham retain extension option over Hernandez as clubs circle

|

West Ham have the option of extending Javier Hernandez’s contract by another year as he heads into the final 12 months of his current deal, according to Claret and Hugh.

The West Ham news outlet claim that while the Mexican international is less than a year away from seeing his current terms expire, the club could trigger a clause in his contract which would extend them by another 12 months.

The reputable Football Insider claim that MLS clubs are readying £4million bids for the striker’s capture, with Claret and Hugh suggesting that suitors are wanting to snap him up for nothing.

If the extension is not triggered, Hernandez could sign a pre-contract with a foreign side in January, with West Ham currently leaving their options open regarding his future.

Opinion

Hernandez is a striker who divides opinion among fans and pundits. Some might argue that he has more of an influence coming off the bench as a substitute than he does when starting games – although he did score against Brighton in the starting XI. Is that the sort of player Manuel Pellegrini wants in his squad, or would he rather someone he can rely on scoring goals no matter when he is on the pitch? That is the question the Hammers boss and board must ask themselves as they weigh up what to do with Hernandez. Cashing in on him now would leave them incredibly light up front, Sebastien Haller the only other senior centre forward option on their books, but it would save them some serious money to invest down the line, with the reports stating he is on £140,000-a-week. An extension would protect their asset from leaving for nothing, but would it then price his suitors out of a move? Time will tell, but it seems as though the Irons have a dilemma on their hands.
