West Ham are interested in Marseille midfielder Morgan Sanson, but will still prioritise signing a striker over another new midfielder this summer, according to ExWHUemployee.
The Hammers have already moved to snap up Spanish star Pablo Fornals, but are understood to be monitoring the 24-year-old Frenchman as well.
But when asked about the five goal operator, ExWHUemployee claimed that a move for a forward was still the main aim for the rest of the transfer window.
Writing on Twitter, he said: “He is on our list but at the moment forwards are priority and we need players to move on before we start signing on other positions.”
OPINION
To be fair, this makes perfect sense. In an ideal world, it would have been nice for the Hammers to pick up a player like Sanson, but having already signed Fornals, it seems like an unnecessarily frivolous piece of expenditure. Compared side by side, you see that the two midfielders are pretty much on an even keel. Sanson edges the Spaniard on pass completion rate and goals scored, but Fornals has a much better disciplinary record and more man of the match awards [Whoscored]. The margins are razor thin in most cases though, and the simple fact of that after is that Fornals and Sanson are very similar players. Why then, would the Hammers go out and spend an exorbitant amount of money on a player that they don’t need in a position that they have already strengthened? It makes no sense, so unfortunately, it’s probably a case of kissing goodbye to this one.
