Gomez hunt has stalled

Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez has long been a transfer target for West Ham United and is still someone the club are pursuing, but the latest noises around the Uruguayan are worrying indeed.

Football London reported on Monday that the club are currently no closer to bringing anyone to the London Stadium since they signed Pablo Fornals from Villarreal a couple of weeks ago.

The Hammers are thought to still be chasing the 22-year-old attacker, but they have not managed to make any headway with the La Liga side since their initial £25million bid was knocked back. Gomez remains Manuel Pellegrini’s prime target, but things are moving slowly with the player currently on Copa America duty with his country.

The revelation that no progress has been made on signing the burly frontman will surely have the team’s supporters biting their nails. This could well be one of those deals that goes right down to the wire.

The fact that Gomez is supposedly a priority transfer target for West Ham but that they are seemingly getting nothing done in terms of bringing him in is startling in the extreme.

Obviously the player himself will want to focus on his international commitments, but that shouldn’t stop the Hammers from agreeing a transfer fee with Celta Vigo. Those talks are between the two clubs, with personal terms and everything else agreed later. So the fact that Gomez is away with Uruguay shouldn’t be a barrier to reaching an agreement with the Spanish side.

Despite that, little progress is seemingly being made, and the longer that remains the case the greater the chance that another team could swoop in and steal Gomez from under West Ham’s nose.
