It’s been another tremendously frustrating season for West Ham United midfielder Jack Wilshere, but he will hopefully soon be making a return to the Hammers first team.

The 27-year-old told the Evening Standard recently that he is hoping to return to action in the near future, and that’s excellent news for the Hammers – especially after the team’s embarrassing defeat to Everton on Saturday.

Indeed, having witnessed Pedro Obiang’s horror show in the middle of the park, manager Manuel Pellegrini will surely be praying for a swift Wilshere recovery.

The former Arsenal man didn’t look great when he played earlier this season, but when fit he remains a quality operator who deserves the chance to really find his feet at the London Stadium. He hasn’t had that opportunity yet, and it’s certain that he’ll be able to do better than Obiang once he’s back.

Whether he does enough to beat captain Mark Noble to a starting berth alongside Declan Rice moving forward remains to be seen. That should be the aim for the England international, though.

It’s easy to forget how much talent Wilshere has because he spends so much time on the sidelines. However, he is a wonderfully gifted technical footballer and pairing him with Rice, on paper, sounds like a recipe for success.

It says it all about how bad West Ham were against Everton that the return of someone, in Wilshere, who looked bang average earlier in the campaign is so needed. Wilshere has a chance to impress upon his return, though, and he must take it.
