West Ham defender Ben Johnson has put pen to paper on a new long term contract with the club, it has been confirmed.

The Hammers announced the news on Wednesday through their official website.

Johnson, who made his first team and Premier League debut against Manchester City back in February, has agreed a deal that will keep him at the London Stadium until at least the summer of 2022.

The 19-year-old fringe player has been training with Manuel Pellegrini’s senior squad on a regular basis this season.

OPINION

This is great news for West Ham. Johnson looks as if he could be a real player, and getting him tied down to a decent contract is a smart move. It speaks volumes of how highly he is thought of at the club that Manuel Pellegrini was willing to chuck him in at the deep end against Manchester City for his debut, and you have to say that he coped, for the most part, very well with the challenge. The Irons seem to have a crop of bright young things knocking on the door at the moment, and any youngster at the club will take massive heart from the progression made by Declan Rice. The midfielder is currently away on international duty with England, and while that may be a ridiculous level of progress for such a young man, his success shows that if you are good enough, Pellegrini will put faith in you. Johnson will be hoping that he is the next to make that breakthrough.
