West Ham are increasingly concerned that midfielder Jack Wilshere could be ruled out for the rest of the season with an ongoing ankle injury, according to Claret & Hugh.

The England international has been sidelined for most of this campaign, making just five appearances so far, having signed from Arsenal on a free transfer over the summer.

The 27-year-old has undergone surgery to try and fix his ongoing complaint, but it is now unclear as to whether or not he will play again this season.

According to Claret & Hugh, a senior club source said: “There’s a real possibility he may be out for the season but there’s no certainty.

“We keep our fingers crossed.”

OPINION

This is such a shame for Wilshere and for West Ham. The midfielder is so supremely talented but has never had a fair crack at a sustained, decent run of game time during his career because of his horrendous luck with injuries. At 27, Wilshere should be in his prime, and should be a shoe in for a starting spot with Gareth Southgate’s England side, but instead it feels like a blessing when he is able to get on the pitch at all. From the Hammers’ perspective, the sooner Wilshere can get back to some kind of fitness the better, because right now he is amounting to nothing more than a reported £100,000-a-week albatross around their neck. It sounds mercenary, and the club will no doubt be willing to pay it knowing that he can come good at some point, but it will get to a stage where, if things don’ improve, Wilshere could find himself shipped out again.
