West Ham defender Winston Reid has been dealt a fresh blow as he is a long way off being fit, according to The Sun.

The national newspaper while sharing that midfielder Jack Wilshere may be out for the season due to an ankle issue, revealed it was also bad news for the Hammers’ centre-back as he wasn’t close to a return.

Claret & Hugh previously stated in September that Reid was predicted to recover from a knee injury in order return to Manuel Pellegrini’s squad just after Christmas, but the latest update pours a lot of doubt on that hope.

The 30-year-old, who earns £70,000-a-week at the London Stadium (Source: Spotrac), was also tipped for the exit door in the coming summer by reliable and trusted insider ExWHUemployee.

“I was thinking he must be coming up to a year since he last played for us, it was about February time I think against Swansea away, about January February time when he got injured so we’re talking about a year out for Winston,” said EXWHUemployee on the latest edition of The West Ham Way on Phoenix FM (Wednesday, December 5th, 19:36).

“I agree (difficulty getting back in) he’s getting older and I think he’ll be likely to go in the summer if we can get any takers.”

OPINION

Every time a piece of news or an update is provided on Reid this season, it always paints a bleak picture for the defender. Reid had a few injuries problems last season and it seems his current knee injury seems set to keep him on the sidelines in 2019. The 30-year-old may be contracted to the club until 2023 but it’s hard to see him sticking around as even when fit, he now faces a battle to get into Pellegrini’s first-team. Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena arrived in the summer and have since established themselves as the club’s first-choice partnership. It would be sad to see Reid’s Hammers career end on a whimper rather than a strong note, but if he isn’t set to be fit anytime soon, it’s hard to imagine him getting the on-field send off he deserves. The 30-year-old has played a grand total of 223 times for the London club and has shown nothing but loyalty during his time with them.
