Ian Wright has shared that Manuel Pellegrini must start coaching his players in order to change West Ham’s fortunes for the better.

The BBC pundit pinpointed where the Hammers manager could win the battle to improve his side and shared that he needed to spend more time on getting his shape and system right.

Wright claimed that Pellegrini had the players capable of moving the club away from the relegation zone but that the London club needed to start looking like a team.

“He has got the players, now he has got to start doing a bit with them. He’s got to start coaching them,” Wright said, as quoted by BBC Sport.

“I saw them against Bournemouth and I have never seen a team so easy to get through, they don’t look like a team, at the moment, that the manager has spent a lot of time on the shape and the system.”

OPINION

Wright made his comments in a BBC Sport article that was analysing whether prestigious managers Pellegrini and Rafa Benitez could adjust to life at the bottom of the Premier League with both Newcastle United and the Hammers struggling currently. Clearly Wright believes the Hammers have a very capable squad when it comes to it being written down on paper based on his remarks and it seems that he suggests it’s Pellegrini who needs to improve in order for to flourish. Wright states that the manager needs to get his shape and system right which implies that he currently believes the experienced manager needs to go back to the drawing board. While Wright believes that training may hold the key, it’s hard to see how Pellegrini is meant to coach some of his defenders into submitting better performances as some of them have clearly forgotten the basics. For example Angelo Ogbonna, who didn’t have the worst campaign last season, has made rookie errors in his outings so far and it’s hard to see how Pellegrini can guide the 30-year-old into getting back up to the standard that he needs to be.
