Jamie Carragher couldn’t believe that Chelsea didn’t bring midfielder Cesc Fabregas on from the bench during the 0-0 draw with West Ham.

The Sky Sports pundit shared that he was disappointed with the changes the Blues made during the game particularly when it came to their midfield area and pointed out that Fabregas should have featured.

“I think the disappointing thing for me with Chelsea really was the changes, I felt, you talk about chances, that’s not a chance, Kante had a great chance so it shows how well West Ham done, we should give them credit for that,” said Carragher on Sky Sports Premier League (Sunday 23 September, 15:34).

“But I just think the changes certainly in the midfield area should have come earlier and we never saw Fabregas, I think Barkley came on in the 79th minute.

“And with Fabregas, I know Kante is a great player or Jorginho but one of them had to come off in order to bring Fabregas as he can thread a pass.”

The 31-year-old midfielder wasn’t brought on during the game and is yet to feature in the Premier League this season.

OPINION

Carragher shouldn’t be shocked by Fabregas lack of involvement as he hasn’t exactly been regularly playing this season. While the Sky Sports pundit is probably right to suggest that the 31-year-old’s ability to spot and play a defence splitting pass would have aided his side’s cause, it doesn’t mean he should be shocked that he got left on the bench. Following Chelsea’s 0-0 draw with the Hammers, where they created only a few clear cut chances, perhaps Fabregas will start to feature more. The experienced midfielder is a sublime passer of the ball and could cause any Premier League side a problem on his day. However the midfielder may grow frustrated over hardly featuring and previously when he has found himself in that position, he has seen unable to deliver the performances he is capable of. With the League Cup clash against Liverpool coming up on Wednesday then that outing will no doubt give everyone a good idea of the kind of form Fabregas is currently capable of producing.
