Marseille midfielder Dimitri Payet is firmly in the running to sign for West Ham, according to Football Whispers.

The 5’7″ (source: Transfermarkt) flyer left the Hammers in order to sign for the Ligue One side last January, after originally moving to West Ham in 2015 following a two year spell in France.

Payet was a hugely influential player to the Irons during his two year stint in East London, and was even named the club’s Player of the Year for his achievements.

Football Whispers – who are used by the likes of Sky Sports – calculates the likelihood of a player joining a club based on the number of transfer rumours they collect. The higher the score, the more likely a player will move.

Payet – who operates largely as an attacking midfielder – scored three out of five, meaning that he is the second most likely player to move to the London Stadium.

OPINION

West Ham have been linked to a reunion with the Frenchman earlier in the summer but nothing has materialised from these rumours – so it is surprising to see that he is likely to sign for them. He has a similar playing style to those names that boss Manuel Pellegrini has already signed, so it remains to be seen why they are likely to land him. Payet put the club through some bad times before his move in 2015, and they should not be even considering taking a player back that treated them so badly previously. Hopefully nothing is to be made of the fact that he is the second most likely player to join, as it would be a huge mistake on Pellegrini’s behalf. He has the players who have the same quality, if not better – and West Ham are much better off without him. He was a fan favourite amongst the Hammers’ faithful during his spell, so it is not very likely that they would welcome him back with open arms.
