West Ham have confirmed that attacker Martin Samuelsen has joined Dutch Eredivisie side VVV-Venlo on a season-long loan.

The Hammers shared the news, via their official club website, and stated that the 21-year-old winger was joining a side with a fantastic reputation for nurturing young players.

Samuelson, who can feature on either flank or as an attacking midfielder, spent the second half of his 2017/18 campaign on loan at Championship side Burton Albion.

OPINION

Samuelson has constantly been loaned out by the Hammers as he has spent temporary spells at Peterborough United, Blackburn Rovers as well as Burton last season. The 21-year-old attacker didn’t have the most successful time in the Championship in  his latest campaign as he managed to register only one assist in his nine outings. However with him set to spend a whole season away from the club at VVV-Venlo then hopefully he will gain some valuable experience in order to aid his development. It is hard for a player to hit the ground running when they secure a transfer in January so perhaps he simply didn’t have enough time to find his feet at Burton last season. Samuelson won’t have that excuse when at VVV-Venlo so it will be intriguing to see how he fares in the Eredivise. The promising winger is contracted to the Hammers until 2020 and will no doubt be hoping to break into the first-team on a regular basis in the near future. So far Samuelson has only featured twice for the club’s senior side.
