West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini has been busy so far this summer as he looks to streamline his Hammers squad for a tilt at a top-half finish in 2018/19.

The club have already made three signings before the start of their pre-season in Switzerland this week, with Pellegrini clearly focusing on defensive reinforcements.

Issa Diop will provide a big presence at the centre of defence, Ryan Fredericks a speedy one on the flank and Lukasz Fabianski an experienced one in goal.

The Hammers have not stopped their in their search for solidity at the back, with the club linked with several other defensive players in recent days.

One of those is Lyon veteran Marcelo, with the club reported by Claret and Hugh to have made an approach before being put off by the Ligue 1 club’s high price tag.

Claret and Hugh have now provided an update on the situation, with the insider website claiming that the Irons had seen a bid rejected for the 31-year-old enforcer.

This is a big development in the story, as it shows the Hammers interest in the Brazilian is serious, and they must now push to secure a deal for a player who would be perfect for them this summer.

Marcelo is a highly experienced defender, having played in the Bundesliga, Ligue 1 and the Eredivisie, and his form for Lyon in recent years has been exemplary.

His 6ft 3in frame will allow him to adapt to the physicality of the Premier League quicker than normal, with his previously mentioned experience obviously helping that too.

Lyon are said to be wanting in excess of £17.7million for the 31-year-old, with the Hammers reportedly valuing him at around £11million.

If the club meet the Ligue 1 side in the middle and bid £15million for Marcelo, it would represent a good deal for all sides, and that must be there next move.

Marcelo’s experience would be the perfect foil for new boy Issa Diop’s raw talent, and the Hammers would have a brilliant duo on their hands if they push through this deal.

It is a no-brainer, and they must move to secure it as quick as possible to get Marcelo in and up to speed before the start of the season.
