West Ham are closing in on a deal for Arsenal pass-master Jack Wilshere, according to a club insider.

ExWHUEmployee, who regularly breaks up to date and reliable transfer information on the comings and goings at the London Stadium revealed on Twitter that a deal for the diminutive 5ft 6in (source: Transfermarkt) ace was “getting closer,” in response to a question from a Hammers supporter.

Wilshere was offered a new deal by the Gunners which according to the Mirror would have seen him take a pay-cut from £110,000-a-week to £90,000-a-week with a number of incentives added on to beef up his wage.

However, despite rejecting that offer and Arsenal then improving the deal, the 26-year-old has also turned that one down which means he is available on a free transfer.

OPINION:

A fully fit Wilshere can only be a good thing for the Hammers but they cannot guarantee they will be getting that from the Arsenal ace who is more widely referred to as Jack “Wheelchair” due to his inability to remain injury-free. But he is available on a free transfer which means any fee that would have to have been put together to sign a player of the class and guile of the midfield dynamo can be used in his wages which will most likely exceed the £100,000-a-week mark. With Manuel Lanzini injured and likely to be out for the remainder of the season, there is a need for the Irons to fill the void left by the Argentine and in Wilshere, they may have not only found a replacement but a better one too. Last term, in terms of appearances on the pitch, was one of the England midfielder’s best and as long as he can sustain that in the claret and blue shirt, then the Irons could have a new hero on the field of play.
