West Ham are set to offer midfielder Domingos Quina a new contract following interest from Barcelona, according to Sky Sports.

The sports broadcaster reports on their website that the Hammers are set to offer the enforcer – who is on £8,000 a week (Spotrac) – a new deal after his performances helped Portugal win the Under-19 European Championships.

Sky Sports had previously reported that the Irons were willing to sell Quina for £600,000 after Barcelona held talks, but they have now pulled a major u-turn and are willing to keep him at the club.

The La Liga giants watched the 18-year-old for the second time on Sunday (29 July) as his country beat Italy 4-3 to lift the trophy.

OPINION

It had previously looked like that Quina was set to move to Barcelona for £600,000, but this is certainly a massive U-turn by the Hammers. They have obviously realised the potential he has and are not willing to give him up easily. The initial decision to sell him may have been to rash on their part, and now want to give him a chance to show why clubs like Barcelona are interested in him. To begin with, they evidently saw the potential in Quina that West Ham didn’t, and luckily for the Premier League club, they have now picked up on that. He is a bright talent, and although he may not get near the first team straight away – he is only 18 after all – he will definitely do so in the future if he continues to improve. For now – if Quina accepts the deal that is to be offered to him – then Barcelona can forget about signing him in this transfer window.
